Blizzard defends Diablo 3 real-money auct
Blizzard has revealed that Diablo 3 will have a new auction house feature that will let player buy and sell items with real money. Blizzard executive VP Rob Pardo made the announcement at a recent presentation, explaining that the feature comes in reaction to the thriving black markets that saw people exchanging items for real cash with previous Diablo games. Instead of trying to stop real cash purchases, Diablo 3 embraces it, he explained. "People were going to do it anyway, and this way it's secure," he said, later defending the feature against the suggestion players could spend more time in the auction room than actually playing the game. "As long as players are having fun, whatever they're doing, I consider that a success," he said. Players can list anything from weapons, armour, gold or even characters themselves in an auction house and sell them to other players for real-world moolah. Players will be able to make a limited number of free listing per week, but otherwise Blizzard will charge a small fee and take a cut of the final sale amount. Blizzard also revealed that the game will require a constant online connection to be played.

EA boss 3D gaming 'hasn't caught on'
3D gaming hasn't caught on as EA once expected it might, and CEO John Riccitiello says the company plans to refocus investment on other areas. "We have not seen a big uptake [in 3D gaming]," he said during an annual shareholder meeting yesterday. "We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home [either]."We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what customers want," he added, according to VentureBeat.EA now plans to focus its investment in growth areas like mobile, social and online gaming. "We see really high returns in these markets and very poor returns focusing on 3D, so we are allocating our resources toward new innovations," Riccitiello said. Earlier this month EA announced plans to acquire PopCap for at least $750 million.

Diablo 3-like trading may arrive in StarC
Activision's somewhat controversial auction house feature in Diablo 3 that'll allow players to make real-world currency sales for in-game items could eventually make its way to StarCraft 2. Speaking during an investors conference call today, Activision said that some of the back-end tech being developed for the Diablo 3 auction house can be leveraged for its globally popular PC RTS game, StarCraft 2.Rather than item trading as players will be doing in Diablo, Activision suggested that players would be able to create put their own custom-made maps up for sale to other players. Blizzard executive VP Rob Pardo said after the announcement earlier this week that Diablo 3's auction house will help prevent players from inevitably resorting to the illegitimate black market to buy items by providing a safe and secure system for such trades to take place within the game itself.
