Jeremy Clarkson talks Forza 4's Halo Wart

Turn 10 has got Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson in to use his instantly-recognisable voice to describe the fictional tech specs of the Halo 4 Warthog that's set to appear in Forza 4. Brilliant idea. Clarkson skims over the details of its nonsensical innards in his usual nonchalant, sarcastic manner. And he compares it to the Porsche 911. Sort of. Watch it. Mike Jackson

Carmack Games help 'reduce aggression'

id man and Doom mastermind John Carmack believe videogames can actually help reduce aggression rather than cause it. "People just play games now and I never took seriously the violence in video games debate," he said in an interesting chat with Industry Gamers. He went on to recall an E3 where reporters would bombard him with questions over the violence in games debate. "In the end it didn't matter, it didn't make any impact on things. I never felt threatened by it and it turned out not to matter," he said. "And I really think, if anything, there is more evidence to show that the violent games reduce aggression and violence," added Carmack. "There have actually been some studies about that, that it's cathartic. If you go to QuakeCon and you walk by and you see the people there [and compare that to] a random cross section of a college campus, you're probably going to find a more peaceful crowd of people at the gaming convention. I think it's at worst neutral and potentially positive."The Call of Duty series has recently once again come under fire after Oslo mass-murderer Anders Behring Breivik called Modern Warfare 2 a "training simulator" for his distressing actions. But according to clinical psychologist Christopher Ferguson - an expert on video game violence and mass killings at Texas A&M International University - those who seek to make the connection between games and violent acts aren't just wrong. They might well be racist. Why? Read his explanation here.

Namco Bandai responds to Pac-Man perma-sa

Namco Bandai has sought to calm the fan flames over its decision to include the same permanent save feature into Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions that had Resident Evil: The Mercenaries fans foaming at the mouth. "There is no way to erase the save from within the game itself without misusing the hardware, causing corruption," it said, without actually explaining why this was the case, although it explains that all the games in the bundle save to a single save file. The publisher plays down the importance of a need to delete the game's memory in saying it would take the average player a long time to max out everything in all the included games."It takes a very long time to get high scores on all the games to fill up the rankings as each game is a stand-alone title," it told Shacknews, adding that bundle contains multiple games and each one "would take an average person 8-10 hours depending on skill level to max out. With 6 games, that's 60+ hours to fill up everything with good high scores."So it's saying you're not likely to max everything out so you shouldn't need to want to delete your progress. That doesn't really address the issue faced by second-hand buyers who want to start fresh. NB went on to say that it "could not comment" on the decision to restrict the game bundle to use a single save file because it's unaware of the specifics that "contributed to the decision".

First F1 2011 game review lands - 8 10 in

The first F1 2011 game review has landed via the pages of Official PlayStation Magazine UK, which awards the Codemasters racer an 8/10 score. OPM calls F1 2011 "a game about appreciation for the sport" that'll "change the way you watch the Sunday affo Grand Prix," while noting that it's still an "unforgiving and newbie-unfriendly" racer. It concludes: "There's no easy solution here, but one needs to be found. The road into F1 2012 needs to be smoother than the one into 2011 because the game deserves to be played."F1 2011 is out on September 23 and the latest gameplay video landed earlier this week.To read the full review buy Official PlayStation Magazine online and have it delivered to your door. Halo 4's Master Chief in high-res art

Here's a nice high-resolution piece of 'teaser art' of Master Chief as he will look in 343 Industries' Halo 4. It was actually much bigger than this, but we had to crunch down its immense resolution to a size more suitable for the internet than a banner for the side of the Empire State building. Halo 4 will, in case you missed the news, be the first game in the main series NOT made by Bungie, instead being handled by Microsoft studio 343 Industries. That studio talked of the pressures of gamers' expectations in this recent developer diary. Mike Jackson

The depth of talent and leadership in this company is inspiring. "Second, as I look across EA and back on its history, I come to an important realization. The people who succeed here are the ones who map their creative vision over a deep understanding of what our consumers want. Our Label structure reflects that strategy. It creates a close partnership between developers and product marketers that connects the creative process to our consumers." Andy Robinson

EA boss 3D gaming 'hasn't caught on'

3D gaming hasn't caught on as EA once expected it might, and CEO John Riccitiello says the company plans to refocus investment on other areas. "We have not seen a big uptake [in 3D gaming]," he said during an annual shareholder meeting yesterday. "We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home [either]."We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what customers want," he added, according to VentureBeat.EA now plans to focus its investment in growth areas like mobile, social and online gaming. "We see really high returns in these markets and very poor returns focusing on 3D, so we are allocating our resources toward new innovations," Riccitiello said. Earlier this month EA announced plans to acquire PopCap for at least $750 million.

Shrek and other DreamWorks characters go

DreamWorks and Activision have announced DreamWorks Super Star Kartz, a racing game staring DreamWorks characterz such az Shrek that, we're sure, will be NOTHINGZ like Mario Kart. At allz. Nopez. 14 characters from DreamWorks' movies Shrek, Madagascar, How To Train Your Dragon and Monsters Vs. Aliens will turn up for arcade races in which you'll be able to "speed, jump, power-up and boost" through karting courses no doubt based on environments from the films. It'll also have stunts, weapons and "hilarious" commentary from Madagascar lemur King Julien. Battle, Circuit and Time Trial modes will feature, along with four-player split-screen multiplayer "on consoles". There's no mention of online play or any multiplayer for handhelds, which is worrying.DreamWorks Super Star Kartz, with a 'z' because they didn't get the memo about random 'z's in titles not being cool anymore, will be out 'this holiday season' for DS, 3DS, Wii, Xbox and PS3. GameStop removing OnLive codes from Deus

Square Enix and game streaming service OnLive have teamed up to offer buyers of the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution free access to that game via OnLive. But that, it seems, doesn't fly well with GameStop. The high street retailer has confirmed that it's told its employees to remove the OnLive coupons from all copies of Deus Ex on PC. An email apparently sent to employees reads: "Please immediately remove and discard the OnLive coupon from all regular PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution."It adds: "Our desire is to not have this coupon go to any customers after this announcement." Several tipsters have apparently told Gamespy that their new copies of the game were previously opened and the coupon missing. Confirming the details of the email, a GameStop rep said: "Square Enix packed the competitor's coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons."Deus Ex: Human Revolution has wowed critics with stellar review scores this week. But if you're in US and want your OnLive code, you should probably buy the game elsewhere. Mike Jackson

Forza 4 Latest trailer presents Infineon

EA 'relaxed' about heavy demand on Old Re

In light of record pre-orders for Star Wars: The Old Republic, EA has assured investors and analysts it has the capacity to ensure a smooth launch period for Star Wars: The Old Republic. EA Games Label boss Frank Gibeau said on an earnings call last night: "We've got a very aggressive plan to be able to scale multiple millions of users coming into the Star Wars franchise and service this fall. We're looking at pre-order campaigns and telemetry coming in from retail as well as online to get a sense of the overall base, and it's very strong."We're pretty relaxed about what we're going to be able to achieve there," he added (via Seeking Alpha). "We'll be able to scale up and light up new servers on a fairly quick basis. And we've got a plan to do that over the months following ship, and we have a lot of capacity built into that."So far EA has only confirmed a holiday 2011 launch for the BioWare MMO, and Gibeau said we're unlikely to get a solid release date for at least another month."As we get through the bulk of the summer, we're going to be ramping up our beta campaign. And by the time to get around September, we'll be in a position to be able to really call the ball and give you the hard ship date."

New PlayStation UK boss named

Fergal Gara is to be confirmed as the new VP and managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK and Ireland later today, according to MCV. The former Asda entertainment boss, who has also worked for EMI and the BBC, will fill the shoes of former SCE UK boss Ray Maguire, who stepped down in April after 17 years with the company.Sony has also appointed entertainment market veteran Philippe Cardon as the new MD and VP for the PlayStation business in France and Switzerland. Recently appointed European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan claimed last month that PS3 is comfortably outselling its rivals in mainland Europe, but that isn't the case in Britain. Argo Online Steampunk VS Hippies

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor), OnRPG journalistA world shattered by Seperstis, the World War 4 in the 23rd century. Not only complete cities and landscapes have been destroyed, even whole continents have been reformed. But two races rise in these ashes and rebuild their civilization in this post-apocalyptical world according to their different philosophies of life. Now the battle for control of Earth rests in the hands of the steampunk Noblian and the mystical tribe Floresslah. Which one would you chose? Do you see the future of mankind in the evolution of technologies or in the symbiosis with nature? It is one of the most important decisions a human has to make. Enter the next generation MMORPG, ARGO Online, and fight for your belief. When I first got into the game I was amazed by the story. Unlike other MMORPG’s that tell/show the story, Argo offers you a cinematic about what happened in the past between the two factions. This helped immerse me into the reality of cataclysm of the Seperstis War. After seeing this beautiful cinematic it was time to choose the faction I wanted to play for and to create my character. I chose Floresslah. After this I could choose my class and customize my character. There are a lot of options to choose from; you can change the default setting such as your hair, skin color and your eye color. But there is also an advanced customizations tab where you can customize every part of your character.Unfortunately the class is race bound which is kind of disappointing, I chose to play to play as a Sagittarius. This class is a male class but I refused to look like a guy and decided to create my own female version. Isn’t she err… he a beauty? The Floresslah are a nature loving nation who evolved and adapted to fit the barren ground environment. Their bodies have evolved to survive in the contaminated environment. They are highly intelligent and highly sensitive to nature which has influenced their development and arts. Floresslah has given the attributes of the elemental spirits to Earthdium, which is used to cleanse power sources and nature. The Floresslah believe that nature is the Mother of All Life and they have an obligation to take care of it, causing an inevitable confrontation against the Noblian, who they believe are destroying nature in pursuit of comfort. The Noblian are a nation who escaped to the underground, then returned to look for Earthdium. Noblians excels in academia and have a strong desire to learn. They are always curious about new environments. They are committed to utilizing nature for convenient living by developing mechanical engineering, alternative engineering, and natural sciences. Noblians use Earthdium in commonly used items such as lighting, power sources, water purification, fuel, medicine and even weapons and mechanical devices. Noblians believe that they are the chosen nation, possessing rational souls and intelligence. They have been fighting a fierce battle with Floresslah, who believe everything has a soul, for control of Earthdium. ARGO Online is a game based on steampunk and fantasy. The environment shows this off and every class has its unique style of gameplay. Every faction has 8 unique classes ranging from melee to support. I chose to play as a range class; the Sagittarius uses guns to fight monsters from a distance. After messing with the controls I found a special ‘Aiming mode’, this mode activates a crosshair in the middle of your screen and lets you shoot manually. If you prefer to be lazy and just let it automatically shoot I recommend you avoid this option. The aiming mode is an unique feature in a MMORPG that not many games use. It adds challenge and fun in a way that most MMOs don’t dare to try.The controls in this game are well polished and there are two different options to move your character. You can use the WASD keys to move your character or you can point to click which can be quite handy if you have to walk far distances. The controls offer quite a bit of freedom and you can even perform acrobatic flip jumps to get around! The skills you gain by leveling can be put on the action bar on the bottom of the screen. There are no other buttons such as your inventory, character info, etc. These menus can be opened using the corresponding keys on your keyboard. You can view and change every hotkey in the options and even assign new ones. Unfortunately the world doesn’t feel finished or really like an open space. For example, I tried walking up little hills and mountains and you just can’t get far up. Even small objects tend to block your path and make the game feel too much like a theme park on rails than a living breathing battleground world. But at least the combat in the game is fast and intuitive, making you glad you went along for the ride. Now I am not really a person to compare games because of their features but I must show the map textures in ARGO do look a little familiar. I recognize the map style as being straight from WoW but I can’t say I don’t like it. I have always been a fan of the textures, and we here in Holland have a nice expression. ‘It’s better to steal something good than create something bad’. And I must say the maps blend flawlessly into the game’s overall feel. The graphics in this game is really beautiful for a free to play MMORPG. The environment is really well made and people that are playing on high graphics can view the well-polished surroundings in great detail. To play this game you need to have a really good processor, the website says you need an Intel Core2 Duo Core i5) processor as minimum. If you have no idea how good your processor is then visit your control panel> system and security> system and take a look. Luckily only the processor requirement is high. Memory requirements are relatively low and the minimum video card is about 4 years old as well.As most of the free MMORPGs, ARGO Online has a Cash Shop. In the Cash Shop you are able to buy bag expansions, experience bonuses, gold bonuses, skill boosts, and costumes with stats. These items that can be bought will benefit you mostly in acquiring experience and gold.ARGO Online has far too many features to cover in depth in a single article. Player versus player, battlefields, loads of class variety, and unique looking vehicles are just some of the features I didn’t have enough time to check into. I really like the steampunk atmosphere and some creatures look superb. I’d say this game might be a huge success with a bit of fine tuning and more public awareness. The website isn’t finished and some text in the game has a few grammatical errors. Nonetheless this game is a really well polished compared to the bulk of its competition. I’d advise every player to try this game out because it defies the standard MMORPG mould and has enough potential to rival any F2P MMORPG on the market.

Final Fantasy XIII-2's English voice reco

The English-language voice recording for Final Fantasy XIII-2 is complete. That's according to Ali Hillis, who lends her voice to FFXIII's leading lady, Lightning Farron. "Well... it seems that we have wrapped recording on FFXIII-2," she said on Facebook last night. She went on to add, meanwhile, that recording for BioWare's Mass Effect 3 is still in progress, along with multiple other titles she "can't talk about". Square recently release two new FFXIII-2 videos, one a narrative trailer and the other a developer commentary video from producer Kitase Yoshinori - see both of them through here. The game is targeting a January release in US, with the EU date still a vague 'early 2012'. Halo Movie Rumors Resurface In Press Kit,

Let's all just calm down for a minute. A Halo movie has long been a dream for fans, one that's almost happened several times. The closest we got was a project that had Peter Jackson producing and District 9 helmer Neill Blomkamp directing. It was put to rest for a variety of reasons. Now there's information suggesting that a Halo movie -- from Steven Spielberg, no less -- is coming in 2012.Not bloody likely, I say.The word comes from a French language press release for the upcoming Halo: Cryptum novel (via CVG), which notes that a film adaptation of the popular series is set for 2012 with Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks leading the charge. This isn't the first time Spielberg's name has been attached to Halo, which I would guess is how it ends up being mentioned in the press release.Unfortunately for fans, Hollywood productions can't really be kept under wraps the way video games are. This is especially true for a blockbuster production, which Halo would surely be, not to mention one with a name like Spielberg's attached to it. That 2012 timeframe is the big red flag here; there's just no way we're at most slightly more than a year out from a Halo movie without having heard anything.Whoever wrote the press kit up was likely misinformed or simply working with inaccurate information. I've dropped DreamWorks a line just to be sure, but seriously folks: don't get your hopes up.Source: Halo.fr

Basketdudes Online BBall Meets RPG

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor), OnRPG journalist In Basketdudes Online you are in charge of a basketball team with which you can compete against other players and accumulate points. As you progress, your players will level up; improving their performance, and new players and items to equip your team with will be available. As each player develops and levels up, his skills improve and you can personalize him to make him unique from all of the other players. Also you have the option of equipping them with a wide variety of items to strengthen their strongest features or compensate their weakest one. When you start up the game and log in it is time to create your team! You have the choice between different teams with all sorts of abilities. These abilities are important throughout the game so pick the best suitable choice with your desired gameplay. After you have chosen your team you can design your own jersey. You can design 2 sets of jerseys so you don’t have trouble playing a person with the same color shirts. After you have designed your jerseys you are able to pick an emblem for your team. There is a wide variety of choices to pick from, all the designs are well made and are all looking very cool. I chose for a Mexican cactus that plays the guitar. From 1930 and even from the beginning of official competitive basketball, many players came not only from each club’s player pool, but also from various different traditional schools that were specialized in the arts of bball. The original three schools: Kiev school, Saber school and the Vonkann Schule were the precursors. Each of these schools had its particular methodology. Later with the development of university basketball, they moved on to specializing in specific training for the WBC Championship. These championships required special skills from the players. Now they call themselves official schools of the WBC. Since then various new schools have joined the original three. Each one has a unique playing style and focuses on different tactics, offenses and jukes.American School: The American School focuses mainly on the showmanship of basketball and it has produced some of the most high profile and most loved players.Asia United: The AUBC (Asia United Basketball Clubs) is possibly the strongest of all the schools, because it combines very methodical tactics that value offense and defense equally.Kiev School: The Kiev school is characterized by its defensive style, which some call the wall. Its training method is based on intense physical work so intense it has no comparison. It gives the player a high-performing, rock-solid physique greatly valued for centers.Saber School: This school is definitely oriented towards offense, basing its style on speed and precision shooting. Its facilities in San Lorenzo claim to have the most powerful explosive sprint training in the world today.Urban United School: The Urban United School came to be as a result of basketball’s popularity expanding faster than schools could house potential players. They all had great potential but missed the characteristics that adapted to the various schools. As a result these players are rough edged and wild but often lacking in the fundamentals.Vonkann Schule: The Vonkann players are skillful and give the team a vision of the game that is hard to improve, offering the team strategic possibilities of the highest level. The controls in this game are quite easy and really feel smooth. To move the current character you have to use the arrow keys along with the WSD keys to do different actions. These keys do different actions depending on the situation; if you are attacking you will pass, shoot and sprint. When you are defending you will steal, block and sprint. Like in every basketball game there are breaks. In these breaks you can change players to let them rest on the bench. The players that are playing can get tired. This reduces their energy and their performance. The players that are tired can miss important shots and are slower in running then before. Fatigue can be an important factor in the game that will help you win or lose various situations. So keep an eye on your players and treat them with care. This is a very beneficial system as it prevents the issues of oldschool bball games where you would only ever pick the two or three best players on your team and ignore the rest. Now the entire team must pull their weight. After a game concludes the characters that participated in the played match will attain experience that will help them level up and acquire more abilities and statistics. You will also earn some cash used to purchase new items and players. You will also acquire various kinds of cards; these items will help you throughout the game to make the chance of winning the game even bigger. Your true test as a coach is knowing when to use which cards to utilize their full benefits. If you want to look up every player’s statistics of how well they are playing you are able to look up the statistics in the team tab. You are also able to see your lineup and trophies in this window. The graphics in this game a rather good looking and have a nice cartoonish style. To play this game you need a DirectX 9.0x compatible video card. Most likely everyone with a computer is able to play this game; the requirements are not that high and you must have an ancient computer made out of bricks if you can’t play this game with a proper frame rate.In the shop you can purchase all sorts of players with different stats, with some players priced higher than others due to their inherent skill. These players are all from different schools, each school is specialized in different training methods so think twice before purchasing a new player. You can also buy all kinds of clothing for your uniform, such as new shoes, armbands, and tattoos. There aren’t any other items you can buy for your uniform unfortunately and I hope they expand the shop with multiple different clothing styles. You can also stock up on cards before especially intense matches to swing the game ever so slightly in your favor.Basketdudes is a fun basketball game to play, the gameplay seems refined and near flawless and there are different servers to make the game playable for everyone with a proper ping. There are also various tournaments to play and win trophies for which makes this game a nice challenge. Unfortunately the community is not that big and could use more players. This game is still in open beta and I hope they will add more items to the shop to customize your character and team to make them seem more unique. Overall the game is a really fun game to play and I would recommend every basketball fan to try this game.

Resident Evil 5 Accident 16 Zombies Inju

This morning in Toronto, 16 zombies were injured on the set of the Resident Evil 5 movie. "Big deal," I'll bet your thinking, "I killed like 16 jillion zombies last night." Well, my cynical friend: These were real zombies. Or, more accurately, real actors dressed as zombies.According to completely reputable news source TMZ, a gaggle of fully-made up actors were standing on set with wheels. The set "suddenly moved," and 16 zombified-actors plummeted over 20 feet to the ground. That's like falling off the roof of a two-story house! Reportedly, none of the injuries were life-threatening, but there were still broken limbs and back injuries, so it's not like this wasn't a serious deal. Here's a macabre detail: The actors were so heavily made up with fake wounds and gore, EMTs had trouble determining real injuries from fake ones. Unlike real zombies, the actors did not simply continue shambling along with broken legs and spines. They were taken to a local hospital to be patched up.Let's hope the zombies get better soon, yeah?Source: TMZAll of the best people are following Stephen Johnson's twitter feed. Yakuza Dead Souls Trademark Suggests Wes

Sega's zombified Yakuza game, Yakuza: Of the End, arrived in Japan on June 9 of this year. Fans of the series in other parts of the world have been waiting for some news of a global release, and it seems that they might soon have an answer.Sega picked up a trademark in Europe for Yakuza: Dead Souls (via CVG), which seems like a safe bet as a more English-speaking audience-friendly title for the zombie-infused Yakuza game. This is in no way confirmation that a Western Of the End release is coming, but it's a good start. The Yakuza series is a funny beast. Part-open world RPG, part-brawler, part-minigame fest, part-something completely unclassifiable, it is capable of hitting any number of gaming pleasure centers in the space of a single hour. Adding zombies to that mix seems like a recipe for awesome; here's hoping fans in the U.S. and Europe get to find out.Source: OHIM (search trademark number 010291482)

Forza Halo 4 video - Now with Cortana com

You've probably already heard Jeremy Clarkson trying to get his head around Halo 4's Warthog in Forza 4. He was rubbish. He may know his XZ120s from his R3T40s (we made those up) but he clearly didn't know his Halo. So, when it comes to talking Halo in Forza 4's Autovista Mode, Turn 10 has got an alternative and she certainly knows a thing or two about the Warthog. Sony's slick 3D headset is actually comin

Remember that slick 3D headset Sony showed off at the beginning of the year? Well it looks like you're actually going to be able to buy one. The PlayStation firm has officially slapped a November 11 Japan release date on the futuristic-looking visor, called 'HMZ- T1', and it's set to keep the same specs seen earlier in the year. While the exterior design has changed slightly (it's not so slick now), the headset still boasts a pair of 1280x720 0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye (apparently offering an experience similar to viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m away), as well as 5.1 surround sound from integrated headphones. The HMZ-T1 includes HDMI input and output (so you can take off the headset and continue on a TV) and is set to retail for 60,000 yen (£481).Sony's exec deputy president Hiroshi Yoshioka said of the device in January, "As a big gamer myself, I couldn't be excited more than when I first played Gran Turismo 5 with this head-mounted display because nobody, not even my wife, could interrupt me so that I could get a higher score." Uncharted Waters Online Arrgh Mateys

By Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist With Uncharted Waters Online finally being officially released, I return to Koei's seven seas F2P MMORPG hoping to see the changes made upon the game's release. Unsurprisingly nothing really has changed with an addition of a few add-ons to the game to which I will elaborate later on.However, before I get ahead of myself (plus I don't want to assume everyone has read my preview) I'll go through the explanation of what the game is about for the benefit of those who stumbled into this review.Uncharted Waters Online is a sea-faring F2P MMORPG from Koei, yes, the company who brought us the Dynasty Warriors series is now venturing into the online market as well (they also brought said franchise to the online market too). The game puts you in the shoes of a either a seafaring merchant, maritime or adventurer in about 16-18th century Europe. Uncharted Waters Online is actually an online spin-off of an old NES and SNES game of the same title.Uncharted Water Online gives you three paths to adventure in-game. You either be the free-spirited travel and discovery centric adventurers, or be the money-centric merchants or the swashbuckler of the seas, maritime. The job classes are easy and self-explanatory enough for anyone who has played any MMORPG. As for those who would be experiencing their first ever MMO in UWO need not fret because the game provides you with a "training course" to help you understand the game's controls and gameplay. The training course in UWO is pretty long-winded and tedious. In fact you can't even skip it so expect the game to treat you like a 10-year-old. The training course is disguised as an "academy course" where you are trained to be an effective sea farer. While other MMOs give you the option to skip it, in UWO it's a prerequisite.Actually, if you're the impatient type (like me) your patience will be tested right then and there. Of course the training awards you with easy fame and experience points, both of which are pretty important in the game. When you mention fame in MMOs you'd expect the usual cosmetic add-ons you'd get in the form of titles or what not. However, in UWO fame is as important as your level. In fact, if you want to get to places in UWO you'd have to be "famous" or you won't be able to dock or even explore other areas. There's also another feature in UWO that you'd normally expect as something "cosmetic" or rather something inconsequential for gameplay. And that's the emphasis on your character's looks and disguise. In terms of your character's "looks" this is translated into Formality Points. The idea behind the formality point system is that better looking characters have a higher sway in the social aspects of the game. To be honest, it's a nice game concept really, but you won't really get to feel the full effects of it till you start fiddling with the investing system. Of course its common sense that investors would want to talk to a spiffy seafarer rather than a dirty pirate, and the NPCs in this game are no different. On the other hand you need to also "disguise" yourself if you plan to visit ports and countries controlled by the moors. Being a "Christian" in the game would mean you are only limited to visit "Christianized" areas and you'd need to "disguise" yourself if you ever want to visit other areas.UWO's gameplay is pretty simple, you dock on ports, explore cities, trade, handle pirates, players or even sea creatures and that's that. The game uses a skill system where every level up would allow you to use more skills in whatever tree you choose. You can start out as an adventurer but have skills from the maritime or merchant tree or vice versa. Also, the game really feels like you are a seafarer with all the emphasis on ports, travelling on ships and even cargo carrying for trade. The game really tries hard to make the game feel authentic and they don't disappoint there. From ship maintenance to hiring your crew and even more in travelling on the sea, you will get your wits tested from allocating resources, stocking up on supplies and having to think tactically on how your ships are fitted. If you want an online game that'd deliver the sea faring experience of the age of discovery, then this is your game. In the spirit of making things authentic, the battles in UWO are tailored similar to actual naval battles of old. There are no instant WIN buttons here but instead you have to angle your ship to be able to fire (if you have only side cannons). You can also "ram" enemy ships if you have the proper equipment or board the other ship if you have enough crewmates to take over. With the release of the game the inclusion of an item store is expected, and the good thing about the premium store of UWO is that the things players can purchase aren't game breaking. In fact most of the bonuses you can purchase in the game are mostly related to ship travel, exp gain or even cosmetic add-ons and that's that.Overall, UWO in its released form still retains a lot of the things that I enjoyed from my first impression preview. The game is still a skill grindfest and the long winded tutorial still got on my nerves. My fear of any balance breaking addition to the game was unfounded with the premium store only providing convenience rather than boosting player's capabilities to get an upper hand.I also like how the game tries hard to be as authentic as it can be. With everything down to the ship maintenance, add-ons and little nuances that really create an ambiance matching the great age of discovery.Of course the only problem is that your characters look more Asian than European, but really that's just nitpicking.Graphics - 3/5 Controls - 4/5 Features - 4/5 Customization - 2.5/ 5 Community - 3/5

AAA retail model 'crushing innovation' -

Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and DmC developer Ninja Theory says it can't wait for digital distribution to take centre stage, claiming that the current "big retail model is creaking". When asked by GamesIndustry.biz about the possibility of the developer working on multiple smaller titles rather than one big one at any given time, creative chief Tameem Antoniades said that something has to give both at his own company and in the industry more generally."It's something we talk about often," he said, "We're in this kind of AAA bracket, I guess you could call it."High budget, high stakes retail model - the barriers to entry for that are so high, so difficult, that we seem to be getting, being offered, decent work in that area. It's hard to say no when you've got a team of 100 and you have to keep the payroll going. Another big project comes along, you tend to go for it. "There's always an opportunity between projects to explore things, a lot of team members are hobbyists, they create their own iPhone games and things like that so I can see us kind of taking a punt with that," he continued. "The whole digital revolution is happening now and it can't come soon enough. The model we're under, the big retail model, is creaking."It's such an opportunity for fun creative games to reach a target audience, there's this stranglehold that the AAA retail model has which I think is just crushing innovation and access to creative content."If you're paying that much for a game, you don't want to take chances. You want everything to be there, all the feature sets. You want it to be a known experience, guaranteed fun. That's not healthy."The health hazards of a AAA dominated industry were considered by Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin last year, who came to pretty much the same conclusion as Antoniades. Portal dev's new game is Quantum Conundru

As promised, Portal co-creator Kim Swift - who now acts as creative director at Airtight Games - has revealed her new game and it looks awesome. It's a first-person puzzle adventure titled Quantum Conundrum.Playing as 'a kid', you explore the huge and bizarre house of your uncle - a wacky inventor named professor Fitz Quadwrangle - which looks more like a laboratory for his creations. An explosion in the house sends your uncle insane and your mission is to locate him and figure out what's going on.But getting through his intricate house is a huge puzzle, for which you'll need the IDS device - Inter-dimensional Shift device - on your arm. This lets you switch between dimensions with different physical properties. For example, you can switch to the 'Fluffy Dimension' in which everything turns plush, so heavy things are light which allows you to move objects that are otherwise too heavy. There's also a slow-mo dimension in which moving objects (except you) move 20 times slower. As you progress from one puzzle room to another you'll be able to switch between different dimensions to solve the puzzles, and sometimes combine different dimensions with truly clever results to reach the exit. Swift explains it all in the video below:So you use an arm-attached device to defy physics and reach the exit of a series of puzzle-filled laboratory rooms. Sound familiar? Regardless of its Portal similarities, Quantum Conundrum looks and sounds amazing and we can't wait to see more of it. Luckily there's not long to wait - it's out in 'early 2012' on Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network for PS3. Mike Jackson

Vita price not a reaction to Nintendo 3DS

Sony's $249 (€249) price tag for PlayStation Vita was not a reaction to the affordable pricetag Nintendo slapped on its 3DS handheld, according to Sony. 3DS was originally launched at the same price in the US in March - until Nintendo chopped a third off the device's RRP in July.Despite having a greatly superior feature set, Vita will launch at approximately the same RRP as its predecessor, Sony's PSP."$250 or €250 has always been our target price to hit for PS Vita, since the beginning of the development of the platform in 2008," Sony's global studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told the latest issue of Edge."We did not price PS Vita to match 3DS. Consumers have to see the value to shell out their hard-earned money, so each product must have the right price to meet the consumers' perception of the value proposition of each product. We believe €250 - €300 for the 3G/WiFit model - is the right price for PS Vita."Vita, which has been dubbed the "easiest PlayStation platform to develop for" won't be hitting Europe and the US until next year - but is set for release in Japan before the end of 2011. CoD-style development 'has been huge' for

Although the Need for Speed games have still been coming in thick and fast lately, Black Box has actually been working on new entry The Run for a number of years. In an interview with CVG EA Black Box's Jason DeLong, who is also senior producer on The Run, was asked how important breaking out of the yearly cycle was to the development team.He replied by calling the move a huge step that allows Black Box to take the necessary steps to ensure The Run is the highest quality product it can be."It was huge for us and I think that was the great thing the company recognised, Black Box was doing Need for Speed year over year between Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted and so on," he said."At a certain point when you have to put these games out year after year you don't have time to reinvest in yourself, neither in your team or your technology," he explained.DeLong went on to praise EA for recognising that the extra time is a necessity by adopting "a split studio development, similar to what Activision did with Call of Duty and Treyarch and Infinity Ward".In the same interview DeLong also said he believes that the decline in the racing game genre were not helped by 'innovations'. Arrested Development pair sign up for Cal

Original video content for Activision's subscriber-based Call of Duty Elite service is set to be created by Will Arnett and Jason Bateman of acclaimed US sitcom Arrested Development. The Hollywood Reporter reveals Arnett is set to visit September's Call of Duty XP fan event to show off the content, and the man himself told the publication he's a big gamer."When you look at my time spent gaming, versus other entertainment outlets, I probably spend more time gaming," he said. "Videogames are a real outlet that need to be taken seriously." Elite is set to launch alongside Modern Warfare 3 this autumn and will offer a mixture of free and subscription features, including social network offerings, a Halo Waypoint-style performance tracker, and extra content including downloadable map packs as part of the paid service (more details here). In the service's original announcement Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg told the Guardian the firm's "engaged some top Hollywood talent to create linear video content that will be exclusive to Elite members. "That content is inspired by Call of Duty," he said. Andy Robinson

Modern Warfare 3 gets folding scopes, bra

Modern Warfare 3 stars alongside Battlefield 3 on the cover of the latest issue of OXM UK, with the mag's main feature revealing plenty of new info on the Infinity Ward shooter. Modern Warfare 3 will introduce foldable scopes, enabling you to mix up your play style without switching weapons, the studio's creative strategist Robert Bowling told the mag."Say you're picking guys in windows out long range in Manhattan, but then kick through a door and start clearing a building. You can now fold down your magnifying scope and already have a close-range optic on your gun - so now you're engaging guys close-target without having to change weapon," he said.Bowling also revealed a new weapon, the XM25 air burst grenade launcher or "Punisher"."It's great for when you're fighting in an urban environment. If a guy is behind a concrete barrier, you can laser-tag that cover point, fire over it and it will then programme the round to explode one metre past it. Anyone hiding behind it will be showered down."Plenty more details can be found in OXM issue 77, which hits store shelves on September 2.Check out the Modern Warfare 3 Survival mode trailer here. God Of War Studio Working On An Unannounc

The sad, revenge-fueled story of Kratos apparently came to an end with the release of Sony Santa Monica's God of War 3 last year. While there's little doubt that we'll see more of the ashy Spartan warrior at some point in the future, the studio has apparently shifted its efforts to focus on something entirely new.A Gamasutra job posting reveals that Sony Santa Monica is working on an "unannounced new IP." The open position is for a Senior Level Designer, and the listing further notes that candidates with experience developing an open world game are preferred. The God of War series is known for its very linear structure, so it seems that this new game will be a departure on more than one level.Source: Gamasutra

Xotic Review Freaky Alien Fun

By Michael Sagoe (Mikedot), OnRPG JournalistIndie game developer WXP Games has just unleashed a strange new title that’s as fun as it is freaky. Xotic is an arcade style first person shooter that’s all about racking up mean scores for killing enemies, grabbing power ups and starting off huge chain reactions. It’s about as straight forward as a game can get, but let’s see if the core gameplay has enough going for it to warrant the small price tag.The premise behind Xotic is simple: You're an alien dude with an alien gun in an alien world that must stop an alien orb from destroying the alien planet. Not much going on here in terms of a story, but obviously it's not the main selling point. You’ll be using your bizarre weapon (or should I say creature) called a Macroterra that morphs, mutates and transforms into various different gun. This crazy thing is your pistol, your shotgun, your sniper rifle and many other weapons all rolled into one. Each level revolves around defeating several enemies including a "champion" enemy (which is really just regular enemies as a selected targeted) and finishing off the level while collecting power ups and score boosters as you go.These elements alone would make for an average game, and if you're only looking to do one initial playthrough, you'll only be getting a few hours out of this, as enemies are pretty dumb and only exist in the game as kill fodder. The fun comes combining all these elements: killing enemies, grabbing power ups and shooting infected planets, all into one huge chain. With that in mind, Xotic is a game that demands to be replayed over and over, re-doing missions to improve your skills and your score, and then checking out the leaderboards to match up your puny score against the world. Getting high scores and perfect chains are tough, but just replaying the stages over and over just to see if I could get a perfect chain going gives the sensation of knocking over a bunch of dominoes… and it feels strangely satisfying.Xotic uses those familiar FPS controls you’re all used to, and for the most part, the feel of the controls are decent. However, some collision detection problems were apparent that made my character get hung up on a few rocks, totally screwing up my runs. Running, jumping and platforming would have been decent if jumping didn’t feel so floaty, which makes halograms riding a bit annoying when you're trying to get off the ground as fast as possible.Another issue with the controls is in regards to how fast you can switch weapons. Since the whole point of the gameplay is to dispatch enemies and shoot targets as fast as possible to maintain a high score, then why does it take a second or so to switch between weapon types? That mere second could be the factor that makes or breaks a good high score, and this small issue really effects the game’s pacing.Overall, the controls work, but they could be better. From a visual standpoint, Xotic has a nice and creepy look to it, with an overall design which is sure to please any fan of sci-fi. From a graphical standpoint, Xotic seems very dated, as textures look rather damp and blurry. Visual effects are constantly flying, making your PC screen look like it's about to barf up a rainbow (whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.) Sound effects are average at best, and while the music here isn’t too bad, it doesn’t do such a great job in setting the mood.Xotic sure is a strange game... A strange game that certainly doesn't push the FPS genre forward, but manages to provide decent fun for anyone that wants a little arcade action every now and then.Gameplay – 4Controls – 2Graphics – 3

League of Legends Ascend

By Jason Harper (Hhean), OnRPG MOBA ReporterWelcome summoners, to the patch v1.0.0.126 article for League of Legends, the game that just can’t seem to keep its evils sealed in a can. This patch includes minor tweaks to champion balance, a slight alteration to the Crystal Scar, and Xerath, The Magus Ascendant.Xerath is a long ranged nuker, a floating laser howitzer who’ll zap you long before he sees the whites in your eyes. Xerath stands in stark contrast to the string of recent melee characters, attacking from as far from an enemy as physically possible. If you enjoy similar long range powerhouses like Kog’Maw, Lux, or Nidalee, he may be your perfect cup of tea.Xerath’s defining ability is his Locus of Power [W], an activated mode that increases both his range and magic penetration, but at the cost of immobilizing him. This spell steroid alone is how he competes with other nukers, as when he is not in this siege mode, his damage and range are both unimpressive. You spend most of your time as Xerath buying time for this mode to come off cooldown, and then proceeding to bombard the enemy from as far away as possible.Oh boy does he have some great tools for doing exactly that, too. His most commonly used poke is going to be Arcanopulse [Q], a low cost, low cooldown, low damage skillshot that bypasses minions. Taken as is, this ability is underwhelming, but enhanced by Locus of Power, this thing can hit people before they can even see you. This is a skill shot with a range comparable to Nidalee's Javelin Toss, but with an instant travel time and a two second cooldown. The other way of enhancing this ability is through the use of Spell Chains [E], a targeted ability that marks the target for a few seconds. If you hit an enemy with any spell at your disposal, it’ll consume the mark and stun the enemy for 1.5 seconds, in the same manner as Brand. This can make the Spell Chains + Arcanopulse combination a nice harassing tool that prevents any trades, and also acts as an escape during a gank. While most of Xerath’s time is spent grinding down his enemy’s health at range, once you think an enemy’s health has gotten low enough for them to be shelled into oblivion, it’s time to wheel out his full spell combo. The most damaging sequence in Xerath’s arsenal is to sit as far back as possible, activate Locus of Power, tap them with Mage Chains, slam them with the first shot of Arcane Barrage [R], then go to town on them with an Arcanopulse, and the remaining two shots of Arcane Barrage while they're still rendered useless by the stun triggered from Mage Chains. If they're still living, pop off another Arcanopulse for good measure. The cooldown is short enough that it is usually ready to fire again after you’re done pounding your enemies with his ultimate. It’s worth noting that he barely sacrifices any range in order to pull off this full combo, so it is always in Xerath’s best interests to be as far away from the enemy as possible, especially if you’re trying to make use of Locus of Power. Nuking the enemy long before they get in range of you, and from over half health can be an extremely satisfying stunt to pull off.The trade off here though is that in order for his main combo to do its maximum damage, you must be in Locus of Power, and therefore immobile. The reason Locus of Power is so important from a damage perspective is due to the number of hits Xerath has to do in order to rack up a decent amount of damage on an enemy. Each and every one of the spells he’s spewing forth are being mitigated by magic resistance individually, so an enemy gets far greater returns from MR against Xerath than almost any other mage in the game, because he has to perform five to six spells to do the same damage that other nukers get done in three. The reason this is a real problem is because using Locus of Power at the wrong time will get you killed. Much like every other mage in the game, Xerath has to carefully control his spacing in order to zone aggressive enemies out, rather than make use of escape abilities to simply hop out of trouble’s way. Locus of Power forfeits this control completely, allowing enemies to easily close ground and murder you until you die from it. You really can only use the ability when your normal, non-enhanced moves are already out of range. At that point, you are likely far enough away to consider immobilizing yourself. Otherwise, stay mobile and leave it well alone until you can get some distance on the enemy.Take a level in Arcanopulse at level 1. Max it out first, since it’s your only early game poke. Mage Chains or Locus of Power both are viable choices for level 2. If you think it’s safe to get inside the enemy's range, or they are a melee character, then go for Mage Chains. If you think the enemy is too dangerous to deal with, then hang back and pick up Locus of Power to snipe them from extreme range. Level 3 should let you grab the one you missed. Locus of Power should be your second to max, to both mitigate the magic resist that floats around later on in the game, and also allow you to more reliably increase you range. For items, you're looking at a fairly stock mage set up, with a few tweaks here and there. Your starting load out is going to be boots and three health potions against most opponents, but Doran's Ring or Cloth Armour with five health potions are also good items against certain mid lane match ups. Doran’s Ring is usually better when you feel you’re going to destroy your lane opponent, so you won’t need the regeneration from any potions. The cloth armour is if you happen to go against a physical damage dealer. If you're heading out in Dominion, I like to start with boots, Blasting Wand, two health potions and two mana potions. The Blasting Wand gets you more early damage than going for a Prospector's Ring, and the survivability it offers makes no difference to Xerath, who is dead when someone gets in range anyway. It also has the final perk of letting you rush something useful very quickly. His mid and late game builds need to go very heavy on ability power (which both enhances his offense and defense due to his passive), but tempered by enough cooldown reduction to get his ultimate off more often. You should have access to your full strength at nearly any time with this end game build. Deathfire Grasp and Morello’s Evil Tome are both good picks on him, mostly because they build from the Fiendish Codex, which gives him everything he needs at a cost efficient price. I’d avoid going for both though. Once you have one of them, and a few Doran’s Rings (or not if you’re in Dominion) in hand, you’re going to be heading straight for a Deathcap for mega damage. After that is usually situational picks - Zhonya’s Hourglass isn’t bad if you’re being rushed down and murdered by physical damage dealers, Rylai’s Crystal Sceptre will allow you more time before enemies get in close, and Void Staff helps against that horrible magic resistance that can cripple his damage output. As an aside, I usually don’t mention boots because they should change greatly from match to match, but you should avoid the recommended Ionian boots. He really needs that spell penetration from the sorcerer’s shoes more than the cooldown reduction at the stage in the match you’re usually buying boots, and he usually won’t wind up with a Void Staff until much later on, so that is the only magic penetration he’ll have for some time.Go with a 9/0/21 mastery set up; it won't do you wrong. His most important runes are magic penetration marks. The rest is really up to playstyle and preference. I’ve been rolling out with mana regeneration seals with ability power glyphs and quintessences, but you could easily use cooldown, magic resist, health regeneration, flat health or anything else that’s useful for a mage.I’m not fond of Xerath. I certainly warmed to him the more I played him, and he’s been a wonderful change of pace from the endless stream of melee. However, he’s also very clunky to play. The casting time on his Locus of Power feels a bit too long, and really can break up the flow of combat. I found myself cursing at the character for some time before I worked out that he almost has a minimum range to his attacks. My biggest annoyance I had while learning him though is you can’t know the range on his Locus of Power enhanced spells until you are actually in that mode, which is too late because you then can’t move to compensate for misjudged distances. What he really needs is a form of ‘ghost’ extension on his skillshots to show you how far they would travel if he was in siege mode. That one gripe I have with him would make both his learning curve that much easier, and for players to more reliably hit at his absolute maximum ranges, which is where he’s at his most effective.I do think his damage is slightly on the low side, but that’s an understandable trade off given the extremely long distances that he can not only hit from, but unleash his most damaging combo. His utility is also a bit limited, but still on par with other nukers like Brand and Malzahar. I can’t get a full read on how good this guy is though after only a few days of play, as I really struggled with him, and found screwing up his positional game to be incredibly unforgiving. I don’t think he’s bad by any margin, but he does have a very frustrating, punishingly brutal skill curve filled with many unnecessary deaths.Outside of Xerath, this patch leaves me little to talk about. All of the changes are very minor tweaks, hardly game changing in any significant fashion. The gold rate reduction on summoner’s rift means end game character aren’t quite so frustrating to deal with, which is a very nice change. They also have a few token nerfs to some of the games currently problematic characters. Not much of a change really though, and hardly enough for them to suddenly be made garbage by these minor tinkerings. To discuss some of the changes yourselves, post in the massive League of Legends thread in the free to play MMOs section. If you haven't tried League of Legends yet, you're missing out.

Hackers steal 20k logins from Star Wars G

A hacking group has stolen 21,000 email addresses and 23,000 passwords from a Star Wars Galaxies fansite and published them online. SWGalaxies.net was targeted by ObSec, a small hacking collective with apparent sympathies for hacktivist groups LulzSec and AntiSec, Venturebeat reports.Jeff Moeller, editor of site owner LFNetwork, said SWGalaxies.net isn't actively maintained any more.Todd Feinman, chief executive of data protection firm Identity Finder, told VB: "It's unfortunate. It must be so frustrating for someone to see their passwords online, given the amount of online sign-ups we have to do. Passwords are a digital identity and password reuse is a serious problem that could lead toward identity fraud."Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts are to pull the plug on the Star Wars Galaxies servers on December 15, the companies announced in June. The Old Republic still targeting 2011 rel

EA says it's still targeting a calendar 2011 release for Star Wars: The Old Republic, but it isn't ready to commit to a launch date just yet. As EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau told us last month, the game's release date is tied to data derived from the on-going beta testing. If all goes well it'll be available before Christmas, but EA has factored a potential delay to 2012 into its financial guidance."We have a date set internally [for calendar Q4], with a lot of assumptions around it," he said last night, according to Gamasutra."We're not done until we're done. ... We're not going to know with enough certainty to publicly announce a release date," until later this month or sometime in October, he added.Earlier this week, BioWare postponed the EU beta testing program for The Old Republic.

Gears of War 3 'Season Pass' revealed

Microsoft has revealed a way for you to purchase DLC for Gears of War 3 that you've not seen yet. The 'Season Pass' is a 2400 MS Point (£20, $30) purchase that gets you four DLC packs that Epic will release for the game over the course of the next year. Those willing to pay actual money for products not even made yet will get an exclusive Liquid Metal Weapon set for their madness, and will in the long run will apparently pay 33 per cent less than someone who buys all the same DLC AFTER they've seen it and made the choice to pay for it separately. Sure, if you're mad for Gears of War and will inevitably take anything and everything Epic throws at you then it makes perfect sense. The Season Pass will be purchasable from launch on September 20. Microsoft says the first of the four DLC packs will be out in November. Mike Jackson

Little King's Story gets PlayStation Vita

Marvelous Entertainment is making a Little King's Story sequel for Sony's PlayStation Vita. That's according to Japanese gaming bible Famitsu (via Andriasang), which says the follow-up is titled 'The King, The Demon King and the Seven Princesses: New King Story.' We're guessing they won't be using the literal translation if it gets a western release.Details are scant, but the game's said to have a new visual style, a 'love' dynamic and it will be published by Konami instead of Rising Star Games. The original Little King's Story didn't make as big a splash as it deserved. We reckon it's one of the top Wii games and hope the sequel lives up to it. Tamoor Hussain
