A Small Boy and a Donkey

rift gold

A small boy leading a donkey passed by an Army camp. A couple of soldiers wanted to have some fun with the lad. What are you holding onto your brother so tight for, sonny? asked one of them.

So he won't join the army, rift gold the youngster replied without blinking an eye.

George Lucas

American motion-picture director and producer, the guiding force behind the Star Wars movie series. These hugely popular science-fiction films brought about a revolution in moviemaking, especially with regard to special effects, rift gold an area where Lucas became a leader in the field.

Lucas was born in Modesto, California, and educated at Modesto Junior College and the University of Southern California, graduating from the university in 1966. His career began with his prize-winning student film THX-1138 (1965), a science-fiction story that he reworked as his feature-directing debut in 1971. With the backing of American film producer Francis Ford Coppola, Lucas then made American Graffiti (1973), an evocative 1960s nostalgia piece.

Lucas’s next film, Star Wars (1977), revolutionized the commercial film industry. A science-fiction adventure that almost every studio in Hollywood had turned down, the story of freedom fighters Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo took popular culture by storm and redefined the nature of the screen spectacle. After Star Wars, Lucas decided to focus on producing films and overseeing Industrial Light & Magic, a company he founded in 1975 to create special audio and visual effects for movies and television. He served as executive producer for the Star Wars sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), as well as for the fantasy Willow (1988) and the popular Indiana Jones movie series directed by Steven Spielberg: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981),rift gold Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

Lucas also created and produced films and series for television, including the series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992-1994). He continued the story of Willow in a fantasy novel Shadow Moon (1995), the first installment of the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy that also included Shadow Dawn (1997) and Shadow Star (1999). In 1996 he formed Lucas Learning Ltd., a multimedia publishing company focusing on releasing educational products in CD-ROM format.

In 1997 Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi were rereleased. The new versions featured new, digitally enhanced special effects and new scenes that had proved too difficult to do for the original versions. In 1999 Lucas released The Phantom Menace, the first prequel to the Star Wars movies. This was followed by the second episode, Attack of the Clones (2002). The prequels tell the story of Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker’s father.

David Lynch

American motion-picture director, noted for his eccentric, visually daring style. Several of Lynch’s works have become cult classics.

Lynch was born in Missoula, Montana. He studied painting at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts but soon branched out into film and made a number of experimental shorts that combined color, animation, and live action. Two of his efforts, The Alphabet (1967) and The Grandmother (1970), won prizes at film festivals and gained him admission into the American Film Institute Center for Advanced Film Studies in Los Angeles. The institute helped finance his first full-length feature, Eraserhead (1977), which he made as a student. A surreal, avant-garde, black-and-white art film, Eraserhead received hostile reviews from the mainstream press but became a hit with college students.
The popularity of Eraserhead led to an opportunity to direct and cowrite The Elephant Man (1980), a moving drama about a real-life 19th-century Englishman who suffered from physical deformities. Critics and audiences liked the picture, rift gold and Lynch earned Academy Award nominations for best director and best screenplay. He then directed Dune (1984), a costly science-fiction epic that failed with critics and at the box office.

Lynch’s next film was Blue Velvet (1986), which he wrote and directed. Regarded as Lynch’s masterpiece, Blue Velvet presents a nightmare version of small-town middle America by combining pleasant images such as picket fences and blooming flowers with disturbing ones such as a severed ear and corpses. Influenced in its style by Spanish surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel and the suspenseful creations of British director Alfred Hitchcock, the film drew critical praise and earned Lynch an Academy Award nomination for best director.

Bringing his vision of small-town American life to television in 1989, Lynch directed and cowrote Twin Peaks, a drama centered around the investigation of a murder. The show was a sensation, particularly with young, upscale urbanites, rift gold and it evolved into a series that lasted two seasons. Lynch directed several additional episodes, as well as Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), a feature film set shortly before the events in the television series.

In 1990 Lynch made the feature film Wild at Heart, a violent love story about two young people on the road. The picture won the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm, for best film) at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1997 Lynch’s film Lost Highway premiered. It conveys a sense of mystery and the main character’s psychosis through the use of dark lighting and surreal, dreamlike imagery.

Lynch took a more traditional approach to filmmaking with The Straight Story (1999). The movie chronicles a journey made by Alvin Straight, an elderly man from Iowa. Straight, who does not have a driver’s license, rides his lawn mower hundreds of miles to a town in Wisconsin to visit his ill, estranged brother.

Kevin Spacey

American motion-picture and stage actor, best known for his ability to portray a wide array of complex characters.

Spacey, rift gold whose given name was Kevin Spacey Fowler, was born in South Orange, New Jersey. His family moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1963. Encouraged by high school classmate Val Kilmer, a future motion-picture star, Spacey moved to New York City and enrolled at the Juilliard School of Drama in 1979. He left after two years and made his Broadway debut in 1982 in the Henrik Ibsen play Ghosts. In 1986 he appeared on Broadway in Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Spacey’s stage career allowed him to work closely with a variety of accomplished actors, including Liv Ullmann and Jack Lemmon.

In the late 1980s Spacey began landing small film roles. His big breakthrough came in 1992, when he received wide critical acclaim for his role as a sinister executive in the film Glengarry Glen Ross (based on a play by David Mamet). Spacey received further attention for two film roles in 1995 in which he played complex villains: In the commercially successful thriller Se7en he played a serial killer; in The Usual Suspects he starred as a smooth-talking criminal, a role for which he won an Academy Award for best supporting actor. Two years later Spacey was on the other side of the law, playing a police detective in the hit film L.A. Confidential.

Spacey made his directorial debut in 1997 with the film Albino Alligator, a low-budget hostage drama. He won his second Academy Award playing a middle-aged father who struggles with a midlife crisis in American Beauty (1999), a film that also won the Oscar for best picture. A year later he played a disfigured teacher in Pay It Forward. Spacey received praise for his role as a man in a mental hospital who may or may not be an alien in K-PAX (2001). The actor played an antideath-penalty activist who winds up on death row himself in The Life of David Gale (2003).
While his film career has soared, rift gold Spacey has also continued to receive accolades for his work in live theater. In 1991 he won a Tony Award portraying a mobster in the play Lost in Yonkers by Neil Simon. In 1998 he starred in the O’Neill play The Iceman Cometh in London, England, a show that also played on Broadway. Spacey was named artistic director of London’s historic Old Vic Theatre in 2003.

I'm Glad

A Sunday school teacher was telling her pupils the importance of making others glad. Now,children, said she,has anyone of you ever made someone else glad?

Please,teacher,rift gold,said a small boy,I've made someone glad yesterday.

Well done.Who was that?

My granny.

Good boy.Now tell us how you made your grand mother glad.

Please, teacher,I went to see her yesterday, and stayed with her three hours. Then I said to her,‘Granny,I'm going home,’and she said, rift gold‘Well,I'm glad’!

GSP's Trainer Talks UFC 129 Title Fight: 'One Guy Is Going to Break'

When it comes to the big fights, it helps to have been there before. TERA Gold That's true not only in the cage, but also in the gym. As UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Jake Shields prepare to face off at UFC 129 on April 30, they have to balance their training with seemingly endless media responsibilities and the ubiquitous presence of the UFC Primetime cameras in their gyms.

It might not sound like much of a factor in fight preparation, but according to St. Pierre's trainer, Firas Zahabi, experience in the media spotlight counts for a lot in a UFC title fight.

"I can tell you, the first time we had Primetime around it was a lot harder. RIFT Platinum It was just more stress," Zahabi told MMA Fighting. "Now, it's the third time we've had them around, and we've had the Countdown so many times, just various other camera crews in our gym so many times, we're accustomed to it. Now it doesn't bother our training camp at all."

Shields, however, isn't so used to the pre-fight whirlwind. While he was a Strikeforce and EliteXC champion before signing with the UFC, rift gold he told us recently that he was at least a little surprised by how "crazy" things were getting in the lead up to this fight.

"That's the whole thing, you have to know that the most important thing is still the fight," Zahabi said. "I wish we knew back then what we know now. The only important thing right now is Jake Shields. RIFT Platinum The other stuff, it isn't going to be a factor for us. Maybe in the early stages of your career, having people supporting you gives you more motivation and makes you put more energy into your career, but these are things that don't affect our team anymore."

Once the two finally step in the cage together, Zahabi said, that's when the pressure will really get dialed up. Both fighters like to break opponents down with a relentless attack,Rift Gold but in a contest between two men with the same approach, eventually something has to give.

"Georges is a pressure fighter and so is Jake Shields. The first guy, in my opinion, to show signs of wear from the pressure is going to lose. It remains to be seen who that's going to be."

Lately GSP's title defenses have been contests where his opponents were almost immediately put on the defensive and kept there. But in Shields he faces a fighter who will bring the fight to him. Then it's just a matter of who can stay on the attack, Zahabi said.

"Georges and Jake Shields both like to get in your face and keep the pressure on. That's what's going to happen, but there's going to be one guy on the offense and one on defense. It might seesaw back and forth for a while, but one guy is going to break eventually and end up spending more time on defense. That's the first sign of somebody breaking. You're going to know what's going to happen after that."

Landlord Landmines: Avoiding the Pitfalls When Renting Parts of Your Property

The idea of making some extra income off your house may sound attractive to many homeowners -- until one starts considering what the costs will be in terms of lifestyle changes, Rift Gold loss of privacy, safety and potential financial liability. Two industry experts provide some sobering advice.

"Our approach is conservative," said Art Swanson, chief of operations for Lightner Property Group, a San Francisco-based property management and real estate development company. "My job as a property manager is to protect the property owner and not give cause for people to sue them."

He recommends the first step a homeowner should take is talk to their homeowners insurance broker to learn what is covered by their policy -- and what isn't -- based on the type of rental they envision. According to Loretta Worters, vice president of Insurance Information Institute, a number of things aren't covered when renting out the driveway or garage, backyard or other areas of the property.

Worters recommends homeowners purchase landlord insurance to cover such things as legal fees if a tenant files a lawsuit, and payout if there is a judgment against the homeowner-landlord. In some cases, these policies also cover medical payments if tenants are injured.

Worters also advises homeowners to consider a personal umbrella policy. RIFT Platinum These policies are designed to provide liability protection beyond the limits of homeowners, automobile and watercraft personal insurance policies, she explained.

"With an umbrella policy, depending on the insurance company, the policyholder can add an additional $1 million to $5 million in liability protection. This protection is designed to 'kick-in' when the underlying liability on other current policies has been exhausted," Worters said in an email interview. "This would be useful if you have someone on your property, as you could be exposed to liability."

Unfortunately for homeowners who are looking to generate income from their properties, the amount of revenue they can expect to bring in may not be enough to offset the costs of the added insurance. rift gold Landlord's insurance, for example, can cost about 25% more than a regular homeowners policy, she notes. Factoring that added cost into the rent could be an option, providing the homeowner can do that and still offer a competitive price.

Rent Control Traps and Background Checks

Homeowners may also want to talk to a real estate attorney, depending on whether the rental income will be substantial or is expected to be an ongoing revenue source, Swanson says.

One of the first things a homeowner should consider is whether they live in an area that has rent control -- even if they're only renting out their garden or driveway, he advises. Real estate attorneys can draw up contracts designed to protect homeowners' financial interests, but even their hands can be tied when it comes to dealing with rent control ordinances.

"There are some nuances of the law that won't let a homeowner take back what they're renting. For example, if you live in San Francisco, RIFT Platinum there are some circumstances where you can't ask the person to leave, even if you want to live in the place yourself," Swanson says. "Rent control situations can and do cover non-inhabitable situations like storage, where you just can't take it away."

And on a personal safety note, Swanson stresses homeowners should go to great lengths to learn more about anyone they're considering renting to. In other words, do extensive background checks.

"You should be asking who am I renting to?" Swanson says. "What is their history? Are they a sex offender or drug addict? TERA Gold Although they want to rent my backyard for gardening, which is nice, will they be growing poppy plants [used for making heroin] behind the corn stalks that I'll see? If they are, you don't want the government coming in and seizing your property. You have to be careful. You are responsible for their actions."

Don't let the allure of that potential added income cause you to ignore the question of who will be paying it to you. Says Swanson: "You may make an extra $100 a month, but at the end of the day you'll be renting to a horrible person."

Katy Perry Denies Dissing Britney Spears, Calls Tabloid Media 'Filth'

Katy Perry has officially come out saying she did not take a swipe at Britney Spears or her new music video, Rift Gold and she had more than a few choice words for the tabloid press who reported the alleged news.

Early in the week, singer Marina Diamandis asked via Twitter what the consensus was on product placement was in videos. Perry responded, tweeting, "do it w/style & grace...Not so in ur face like some. RIFT Platinum U hv to get creative w/it. Some artists don't care tho, & u can tell."

Certain people and some members of the media took Perry's tweet to mean that she might indirectly be referring to Spears' recent 'Hold It Against Me' video.

In the video, Spears holds her own perfume, rift gold Radiance, and plugs cosmetics company Make Up Forever, online dating site Plenty of Fish and Sony. It has been reported that Spears earned a cool $500,000 for all the product placements.

Perry took to Twitter to explain what she meant and had more than a few choice words for the media: "Dear tabloid media aka FILTH: pls note I expressed an overall feeling bout product placement, RIFT Platinum their roles in vids & the art of them being... complimenting or sticking out. Most, if not ALL popsters welcome deals w/products 2 offset costs of big budget vids in these recessional... music industry times."

She continued, TERA Gold "I'VE used them in MY vids before & am happy 2b able 2 make a better vid because of. Once AGAIN, stop pitting artists...against artist for ur sensational satisfaction & stick to what ur best @: lying, gossiping, exaggerating & overall lending a hand 2 the... ...deterioration of a generation."

Nine Ways of Looking at Randy Couture's Final Fight

According to Randy Couture, his fight against Lyoto Machida at UFC 129 will be his last. After nearly 14 years in the cage and a couple failed attempts at walking away from the sport for good, the importance of this fight all depends on how you look at it.

I. Will he or won't he? When Couture says that, win or lose, he'll hang it up after this fight, it's hard to take him at his word. Not to question "Captain America's" credibility, but we've heard this song and dance before. His reasoning is perfectly sound. He can still compete at 47 years of age, but he's also still healthy enough to enjoy the fruits of his labors and he'd like to keep it that way. That makes perfect sense. Then again, it's not like that's a new development in his life. Couture hasn't needed the money for a while now. He's been doing this because he loves it, and maybe – just maybe – because he's addicted to the feeling he gets from standing in the cage on a Saturday night, listening to an arena full of people chant his name after he's physically broken another human being. You can't buy that kind of rush, but you might, if you're not careful, go looking for it just a little too long.

II. Couture enters this fight with a career record of 19-10, which, on paper, seems pretty mediocre. There are 28-year-olds with similar records getting turned away from 'Ultimate Fighter' tryouts. Tim Sylvia has a career mark of 28-7, for crying out loud. Keith Jardine is 17-9-2! What does it all tell us? That it's not just how many fights you won, but who you beat. Sure, Couture's record benefited from the Steven Grahams and James Toneys of the MMA world, but of his 29 pro MMA bouts, 15 were UFC title fights. If he really does retire after the Machida fight, he'll do so as a man who spent literally half his career in championship bouts. Now that's a legacy.

III. Even when doors have been slammed shut forever, they can usually be pried open again with the right amount of money. While Couture insists he's done, TERA Gold he recently told Steve Cofield that the UFC would have to really "step up" to get him back. That vague phrase could mean a lot of things. Does he mean step up with a better fight offer? Step up with a cushy executive gig like Chuck Liddell's? We don't know, but we do know that's not something you say if you're absolutely, 100 percent done. It's more like something you say when you're 90 percent done, but could always be coaxed out by one last enormous payday.

IV. At this point, MMA could benefit more from Couture's retirement than from his continued participation. As our own Mike Chiappetta wrote earlier this week, Couture has always had a bit of the advocate in him. rift gold That voice has necessarily been muted while under contract with the UFC, but once he's out he could be the leader on issues like fighter pay, health insurance, pension funds – maybe he could even be the driving force behind creating a fighter's union that would address all those issues. RIFT Platinum MMA needs an elder statesman with the clout and the fearlessness necessary to lead that charge. It also needs someone willing take on this battle even though he doesn't personally need the spoils from it. If that someone isn't Couture, then who? And when?

V. According to oddsmakers, Couture is probably going out on a loss. Machida is greater than a 3-1 favorite all across the board, and when you look at Couture's recent performances you can see why. His best chance to win this is to do to Machida what he did to Brandon Vera, making this a slow, boring fight that takes place almost entirely in the clinch. RIFT Platinum He could potentially win that way, but is that really how he wants to spend his final 15 minutes in the Octagon? True, it would at least dampen the UFC's incentive to try and lure him out of retirement later, but every good showman knows that the key is to leave them wanting more, even if you have no intention of giving it to them.

VI. He'd been on this earth 43 years and 255 days when he beat Tim Sylvia for the UFC heavyweight strap, Rift Gold making him the oldest man to ever become a UFC champion. That's a record that's going to stand for a while. Or at least until Anderson Silva retires to become a professional dancer, gets bored, and comes back to beat up whichever poor sap is keeping his belt warm by then.

Friday's Frosty Mug

Maybe good pitching is contagious. After a couple of rough starts to open the season Randy Wolf pitched 6.2 scoreless innings last night to lead the Brewers to a 4-1 win in Pittsburgh. Wolf also struck out ten batters in the game, crossing into double digits for the first time as a Brewer. The Brewers narrowly missed their fourth shutout in 12 games and completed the sweep of the Pirates.

Jonathan Lucroy was back in the lineup yesterday for the second straight day, going 1-for-4. Jaymes Langrehr of The Brewers Bar has a look at Lucroy's offensive value and compares him to A's catcher Kurt Suzuki. Lucroy had previously had some issues catching Randy Wolf which led to George Kottaras becoming Wolf's personal catcher last season, but Tom Haudricourt says the two were able to put that behind them. In that post he also says that Wil Nieves will catch Chris Narveson tonight.

Other notes from the field:

Nyjer Morgan drove in a run with a ninth inning double in his only plate appearance last night, but fell down between second and third and was tagged out.
Morgan entered the game off the bench because Erick Almonte started in right. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and Jack Moore can't believe he's still with the team.
Wolf's ten strikeout game was the 14th of his career, but only his fifth since 2002.
Randy Wolf, Prince Fielder and Paul Maholm are leading FanGraphs' Star of the Game voting.
Here's a transcript of Ron Roenicke's postgame remarks.
Steven Pearce started at third base for the Pirates last night for the first time in his major league career. He's played in 56 games at first and 49 in the outfield.
10,517 fans paid to see last night's game.
The Brewers are in Washington today to open a series against the Nationals, with Nyjer Morgan returning to the nation's capital for the first time as a member of the Brewers. Morgan talked to Tom Haudricourt about the incidents that led to his departure, and The Nationals Enquirer accused him of taking a cheap shot at Nats manager Jim Riggleman. It could be an interesting weekend.

Speaking of Morgan, Tim Young (aka tcyoung) of MLB Soup has a look at Morgan's abysmal 2010 season in Washginton, and suggested that a 5% increase in Morgan's O-Swing% (swinging at pitches outside the strike zone) may have led to a dip in his numbers.

We'll have our series preview up in a couple of hours, but in the meantime Tom Singer of MLB.com looks ahead to this weekend's games.

Since starting 0-4, the Brewers are 7-1 over their last eight games. Brewers Daily has a look at how the Brewers have overcome losing Zack Greinke, Corey Hart et al for the first month.

It's been a pretty unique start to the 2011 season for Prince Fielder. TERA Gold He's showing more power than he typically shows in April, but he's also not striking out much: Dave Cameron of FanGraphs notes that Fielder entered play yesterday among the league leaders in strikeout percentage. Of course, as soon as Cameron put those words on the internet Fielder went out and K'd twice against Paul Maholm to double his season total.

I'm guessing Fielder will eventually work his way off of this list, RIFT Platinum but the B-Ref Blog notes that Fielder has the ninth fewest career home runs (195) among players who have hit at least 40 in a season. Ben Oglivie is 20th on the list with 235.

In the minors:

LaTroy Hawkins' rehab is coming along: He's finished his work in Brevard County and is expected to report to Nashville.
Corey Hart should also be in Nashville soon. He took batting practice with the team again on Thursday. rift gold Catcher Shawn Riggans has been activated from the minor league DL and assigned to Huntsville. He missed all of spring training with pneumonia.

As part of yesterday's All Questions Answered thread, John Sickels of Minor League Ball said Wily Peralta could start generating some significant buzz as a prospect if he puts together two or three more good starts.
On the field the affiliates went 2-2 last night, with Erik Komatsu going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in Huntsville's 6-2 win over Carolina. RIFT Platinum You can read about that and more in today's Minor League Notes.
@TugHaines was in attendance for last night's Brevard County game, and sent in these excellent pictures.

Wisconsin second baseman Nick Shaw walked five times in five plate appearances last night. He's now hitting .227/.469/.364 in 32 Midwest League PAs.
Also at Wisconsin, catcher Cameron Garfield has been placed on the DL, but the team isn't revealing why.

Baseball America reports the Brewers have released 2008 30th round pick Wayne Dedrick. Rift Gold He hadn't played in a game since appearing for the AZL Brewers in 2009 and was recently suspended for testing positive for a drug of abuse.

How to Cope With Losing Child Custody

Overview
A truly difficult situation is losing custody of your children. Rift Gold Although each case is different, some general strategies exist that may help you better cope with losing custody of your children, according to "Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce" by Emily Doskow. These strategies exist to aid you in dealing with a loss of child custody both personally and legally.

Step 1
Take full advantage of all your scheduled visitation times. Spending all permitted time available with children is helpful to you personally and legally. Through visitation you maintain a meaningful relationship with your child. In addition, you demonstrate your ability to deal with and relate to your children in an appropriate, healthy manner, should you desire to attempt to regain custody.

Step 2
Sign up for counseling or therapy. RIFT Platinum Professionals are available to specifically work with people like you who are in the aftermath of losing child custody.

Step 3
Retain an attorney. rift gold A lawyer is in the best position to ensure that your rights and interests are fully protected, not only today but into the future as well. The American Bar Association maintains resources to assist you in finding a lawyer for hire or an organization that provides no-cost representation if you cannot afford to hire an attorney.

Step 4
Keep your children out of the line of fire. Do not complain to your children about the loss of custody. Do not bad mouth the other parent.

Step 5
Resolve to be patient. RIFT Platinum Do not fall for the misconception that you immediately can return to court and seek a restoration of child custody. Many states require a specific amount of time to lapse before you can file a motion in that regard. Moreover, TERA Gold you also need to demonstrate a material change of circumstances, meaning that the custody arrangement ordered by the court after you lost custody must no longer serve the bests interests of your children.

How to Negotiate a Divorce

Overview
In a marriage dissolution proceeding, one stage of the divorce process involves attempting a settlement of issues with your spouse, according to "The Divorce Organizer & Planner" by Brette McWhorter Sember. The fact is that a majority of divorcing couples are able to resolve at least a portion of the matters at issue between them. Although no set formula exists for reaching a settlement with your spouse, some common practices likely can prove helpful to you in your own divorce negotiations.

Step 1
Make a list of major issues in your divorce case, including property and debt division, child custody, and any other matters that require resolution during the course of your marriage dissolution proceedings.

Step 2
Rank specific issues in order of importance to you. For example, if obtaining primary residential custody of the children is vital to you, make such a notation on your list. On the other hand, if there are items of personal property that do not mean much to you, make a notation of that fact as well.

Step 3
Schedule an initial meeting with your spouse regarding settling issues associated with the divorce. If you have many issues to dicuss, you might agree to address specific issues during the initial session, and to deal with the remaining matters at a later date.

Step 4
Meet with your spouse as scheduled. Take turns staking out positions regarding different issues. Immediately record areas of agreement in writing. Continue the session for a reasonable period of time,
Rift Gold perhaps not more than two hours, noting in writing all matters you agree upon. At the conclusion of the session, both you and your spouse sign off on the written notes outlining agreements reached to date.

Step 5
Schedule another settlement discussion session at the conclusion of the first meeting. Repeat the process until you reach agreement on most, if not all, divorce-related issues.

Step 6
Schedule a session, or more as needed, with a mediator if you reach a sticking point on some issues. A mediator is a professional with the training necessary to facilitate discussion and negotiation between you and your spouse on issues left unresolved through your direct efforts. She does not make decisions for you. Rather, she merely assists you and your spouse in reaching a settlement.

Step 7
Obtain a settlement agreement form from the clerk of the court where your divorce case pends. RIFT Platinum Record the specifics of the agreements you and your spouse have made.

Step 8
Sign the divorce settlement agreement in front of a notary public. rift gold Both you and your spouse sign the document.

Step 9
Submit the divorce settlement agreement to the judge presiding in your case for review and approval. RIFT Platinum Any outstanding issues are resolved through a hearing or trial before the judge. Her decisions on these matters will be included in the final divorce decree。

Art Theft

What Was the Most Expensive Art Theft in History?

Last week’s theft from the Paris Museum of Modern Art saw criminals make off with more than $1 million in paintings, rift gold according to news reports. But although works by Picasso and Matisse disappeared in the Paris robbery, that heist doesn’t even compare to the Gardner Museum and Mona Lisa jobs.

There is some debate over which heist has earned the title of the most expensive one in history, said Alice Farren-Bradley, a stolen-art recovery specialist at the Art Loss Register, a firm that maintains the world’s largest database of stolen and missing art.

The debate revolves around the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa. The robbery would undoubtedly rank as the most expensive art theft of all time, but since the painting is essentially priceless, no one can assign a value for the purpose of comparison to other heists, Farren-Bradley said.

Beside the Mona Lisa theft, the most expensive art robbery in history is the March 18, 1990, robbery of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, according to the FBI. In that job, thieves made off with almost $300 million in paintings, including works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Monet, according to the FBI.

While that high dollar figure may make art robbery seem as lucrative as it does in movies like “The Thomas Crown Affair,” real art thieves rarely make big money off their crimes, said Farren-Bradley. Since the stolen pieces of art are easily recognizable, fencing them proves prohibitively difficult.

“Often, it seems that the organization of theft is rarely accompanied by an equal amount of planning about what to do once the criminals have the painting in their hands,” Farren-Bradley said. It would be nearly impossible to sell these works on the open market.

For that reason, rift gold many art thefts end with the robbers trying to sell the paintings back to the people or institution they stole it from, Farren-Bradley said. In other cases, if the paintings aren’t recovered, the robbers either destroy the paintings to cover their tracks, trade the paintings for guns or drugs on the international black market or sell them to unsuspecting low level dealers as imitations paintings, Farren-Bradley said.

Kenyans Outraged Over Rising Fuel Prices

Discontent is rising in Kenya's public and private sectors over the record-setting price of fuel. With ongoing unrest in North Africa and border clashes in northern and southern Sudan, the price of fuel is reaching new heights in Kenya. The price has already topped 110 shillings per liter of petrol in Nairobi, or $1.30, a new record for the East African nation. The price has jumped from under 90 shillings just over a month ago, prompting concern for Kenya’s people and government alike.
With no end in sight,V hundreds of protesters from Kenya’s civil society and working classes took to the streets of Nairobi Tuesday to demand relief from Kenyan lawmakers.

But in the halls of parliament, tensions were also running high, with the blame for high prices landing on the shoulders of Kenya’s Ministry of Energy. Led by MP Ababu Namwamba, parliamentarians grilled Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi, holding corruption within his department responsible for the rising prices. MP John Mbadi suggested that Murungi resign, saying he spent more time in court as a witness than at his post.

Murungi rejected the charges of incompetence and corruption, telling the chamber he was addressing issues of graft.

"Where there are issues of corruption I’m taking action on them and that is the reason why I’m appearing in court as a witness. It is one of the ways of fighting corruption." Murungi explained.

He laid the blame for rising prices on the rise in global petroleum prices as well as rising inflation in Kenya.

But for MP Joseph Nkaissery, the problem was not corruption, but Kenya’s coalition government and its ability to make decisions.

"Who is in charge of increasing this fuel? Is it not the government?" he asked. "Mr. speaker, this is a problem of leadership. And we warned this country. Never again - and I pray - never again, this country should never have a coalition government because we are stuck."

Prices of fuel in Kenya are determined by the country’s Energy Regulatory Commission, which last week announced another increase.

The impact is beginning to spread into other staple items such as flour and corn. According to the World Bank, corn prices in Kenya have jumped 27 percent in the last three months.

After protests hit cities across the country, Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday announced a 20 percent tax cut on diesel fuel to help stem rising costs. But consumer organizations in Kenya have panned the cuts as too little too late.

Yoshihiro Koyama Claims Shooto Pacific Rim Title

It took less than two minutes for Yoshihiro Koyama to bring an an end to a two fight losing streak and seize the Shooto Pacific Rim 154-pound Belt at Shooto: Shootor's Legacy 1 at Korakuen Hall on Monday. RIFT Platinum Shinji Sasaki was bringing all the moment into the title bout but a left hook only one minute in dropped the grappler and from there Koyama pounded to bring the quick referee stoppage TKO. rift gold Stakes were high for the Paraestra Matsudo product fighting under the hugely successful Team Kurofune banner as Koyama revealed post fight that if he would have lost the bout, he may have retired.

Current 143-pound Shooto Pacific Rim Champ Taiki Tsuchiya, former 154-pound Pacific Rim Champs Yusuke Endo and Kotetsu Boku and former 132-pound Shooto World Champ Masakatsu Ueda also all picked up impressive victories over Tony Hervey, Daisuke Sugie, Yukinari Tamura and Ralph Acosta respectively.
143-pound Shooto Pacific Rim Champion Taiki Tsuchiya stood strong against former King of the Cage Champ Tony Hervey to score an impressive first round TKO.

The Rumina Sato pupil endured flashy kicks and hard, one-punch KO attempts from Harvey but Tsuchiya's more refined striking wore down the American. As Tsuchiya's hands were taking their toll, Rift Gold Hervey literally had to try and run to get out of the corner or faced being knocked out. His attempts at sprinting to safety were counter-productive though as Tsuchiya chased down the American to hook him and send him to the canvas. From there, Tsuchiya pounded away to eventually bring the referee stoppage.

Tsuchiya revealed post fight that he had intended to call out 143-pound World Champ Hatsu Hioki, RIFT Platinum but after seeing his December 30th Sengoku Featherweight Title match, he decided he was not ready.

John Shurna Declares for NBA Draft, Doesn't Hire Agent

The good news is that Shurna hasn't hired an agent: that essentially means that if he doesn't get drafted (or doesn't reach an agreement with the team that drafts him, although that would be, well, less likely, although the lockout does help things), RIFT Platinum he can return to school. (UPDATE: My draft knowledge was wrong. Thanks, Randolph Morris.)He could also, opt to go to Europe, where I'm sure any number of teams would be willing to sign him.

Yesterday, I speculated on Twitter that with the large amounts of highly talented players not coming out for the draft this year due to the lockout, rift gold Shurna's chances might be considerably higher this year than last year, and to be honest, he's not THAT absurd a long shot: Draft Express has him as the No. 26 junior, and predicts that some current seniors in the 20's of this draft could get picked. With guys like Harrison Barnes and Jared Sullinger staying in this year, Rift Gold and definitely eating up those top spots next year, maybe this could be the year a second-round pick is available for Shurna.

Best of luck to Shurna, although, to be honest, every NU fan is kinda sort of hoping he doesn't get drafted so NU has a shot at the tourney next year. RIFT Platinum I'm writing quick so I'm not sure, but of course, he could always decide not to enter between now and June May 8..

Scientists Say Special Diet May Ease Symptoms of ADHD in Children

A specialized diet may help ease the symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, according to Dutch researchers.

A recent study from Radboud University and the ADHD Research Center in the Netherlands observed 100 children, ages 4 to 8, with ADHD. Researchers divided children into two groups and gave them either an "elimination diet" or a typical healthy diet for five weeks.

The elimination diet was limited to rice, water, white meat poultry, such as turkey, and some fruits and vegetables. Researchers kept wheat, tomatoes, oranges, eggs and other dairy products out of the diet since these foods are often linked with food allergies and intolerances.

Upon completion of the initial five weeks, researchers selected a new group of children based on their reaction to the first part of the study. Scientists monitored the children while incorporating new foods into their diets based on individual blood results.

The findings, published in The Lancet medical journal, revealed that a restricted diet led to significant improvements in the symptoms of some ADHD sufferers.

Dr. Jan Buitelaar, lead study researcher, child psychologist and professor, RIFT Platinum and head of general and child adolescent psychiatry at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center, said researchers cannot pinpoint exact foods that affect all children. "It is very dependant on the individual child," Buitelaar told AOL Health.

During the first part of the study, 64 percent of children in the elimination diet group had significant improvements with regard to their ADHD symptoms. Researchers also noted a decrease in defiant behavior.

The study concluded that "a strictly supervised restricted elimination diet is a valuable instrument to assess whether ADHD is induced by food."

Dr. Eric Braverman, author of "The EDGE Effect" and "Younger (Sexier) You," says chocolate, rift gold caffeine, sugar, white flour, high fructose corn syrup, processed foods, saturated fats and dyes can affect or worsen a child's ADHD.

"These foods cause abnormal transmissions of dopamine, serotonin and an imbalance of the brain's neurotransmitter and regulation processes," Braverman told AOL Health.

Parents of children suffering from ADHD can reduce the child's diet to rice, RIFT Platinum water, white meat, and fruits and vegetables that contain no risk of allergy. Then they can start adding foods to to his or her diet while monitoring the child's behavior.

"You observe behavioral improvement week by week as you add food until you see evidence of behavioral changes," explains Buitelaar. Rift Gold "It may take several weeks to determine the incriminating foods."

ADHD, is one of the world's most common mental disorders among children, according to the National Institute for Mental Health. Statistics from the American Psychiatric Association show 3 to 7 percent of school-aged children suffer from ADHD.

Well respected referee Herb Dean has drawn the assignment as the third man in the cage for Saturday's UFC 128 main event pitting champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua against challenger Jon Jones.

New Jersey state athletic control board legal counsel Nick Lembo informed MMA Fighting of the decision on Tuesday.

Dean is one of the most experienced officials in the sport, reportedly presiding over 4,000 matches during his career. His most recent UFC main event was in last month's UFC 127 draw between BJ Penn and Jon Fitch in Australia.

While Dean will decide things in the cage, if the fight goes to the judges, Douglas Crobsy, RIFT Platinum Cardo Urso and Dave Tirelli will be scoring the bout at cageside.

Crosby has been judging fights for over a decade, but found himself in some hot water in 2010, after messageboard comments to fans following Frankie Edgar's controversial UFC 112 win over BJ Penn. rift gold He was back to judging four months later and has judged notable fights since then, including the UFC 120 main event, in which Michael Bisping won on points against Yoshihiro Akiyama, as well as the UFC 126 co-main event, in which Forrest Griffin defeated Rich Franklin by decision.

Meanwhile, RIFT Platinum Urso was also a judge in the main event of last year's New Jersey UFC show, scoring the welterweight title fight 50-45 in favor of champ Georges St. Rift Gold Pierre over Dan Hardy.

Tirelli is a former MMA fighter who holds a notable win over former UFC star Luke Cummo before retiring.

Rua (19-4) and Jones (12-1) have only been to a decision five times in a combined 36 matches

Are Your Kids Overweight? Questions for Your Pediatrician

As a parent, you don't want to admit that your child is gaining weight or talk to anyone about it. Though it may be awkward, you need to ask your pediatrician about your child's weight. Marilyn Tanner-Blasiar, a dietitian and American Dietetic Association spokesperson, and Abigail H. Natenshon, psychotherapist and author of "When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder," recommend using the following questions as a starting point when speaking with your child's pediatrician.

What is a healthy weight for my child's height? Your pediatrician will use a growth chart to determine how your child is growing compared to other children of the same age and gender. This will assess whether your child is developing proportionately. If your child is not growing normally, the doctor will look for other signs that the child is unhealthy and take his family history into account before determining if there's a problem.

What is my child's body mass index? BMI is calculated using one's height and weight. It is one way to determine the amount of body fat on children's or teens' bodies. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using BMI to screen for obesity starting at age 2. Still, it's not perfect. It doesn't distinguish between sexes or ethnicity and is inaccurate for extremely muscular athletes and very thin and very obese people.

Can you refer us to a pediatric dietitian? Pediatric dietitians are dietitians who specialize in the nutritional care of children. They develop nutrition programs for kids and can help solve picky-eater problems.

Is my child at risk for diabetes or high blood pressure? Adults are not the only ones who suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure. Children who have a family history of diabetes, are inactive and are overweight are likely to be diagnosed with the disease. High blood pressure, which is a sign that there are other problems in the heart, blood vessels or kidneys, can also occur in children.

How much activity and exercise should my child get? There are three main elements of fitness: endurance, strength and flexibility. Rift Gold The National Association for Sport and Physical Education recommends that school-aged children get an hour or more of physical exercise every day. For incredibly busy children, that exercise requirement can be broken up over the course of the day.

What should we do differently as a family? Your pediatrician will point out that losing weight is a group effort and offer suggestions on how to help your child. RIFT Platinum Surprisingly, you might have to modify your own behavior because your children will follow your example. Your pediatrician might suggest walking after dinner or playing catch as a workout. She will also encourage you to stock your house with healthy snacks and treats.

Does he or she need to go on a "diet"? rift gold Although your child's eating will change, many pediatricians will not don't use the term diet because it focuses on calorie restriction. Children who practice extreme calorie restriction may have problems with their metabolism later in life.

How do I discuss weight loss effectively without offending my child? Your child might be incredibly sensitive about his or her weight, and your pediatrician can help you discuss the issue. RIFT Platinum Your child might be getting teased at school or be embarrassed. If he or she is an emotional eater, you'll need to help resolve the feelings that are affecting his or her eating habits. If your child isn't willing to discuss his or her problem with you, another friend, family member or mental health professional can help

Motivation in Diet and Exercise

People are continually trying to exercise more and eat diets that are conducive to good health. The problem of childhood and adolescent obesity continues to be a major focus of concern for health care professionals in North America. This article describes the necessary tools to make lifestyle changes with the potential to reverse this troublesome trend.
rift gold
The problems associated with obesity and chronic degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and type 2 diabetes, are now reaching epidemic proportions. The prevalence of obesity, where an individual has a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30, is increasing worldwide. Currently, there are approximately 300 million obese individuals around the world.More alarmingly, in the United States, approximately 30% of all adults are categorized as obese. Despite this prevalence being somewhat lower in Canada, the rate has increased significantly there during recent years as well. In 2003, Bouchard reported that obesity costs the unregulated U.S. health care system approximately $100 billion annually. Therefore, it is time to take a serious look at how to reverse this troublesome trend.

In 2000, data collected by the U.S. Department of Health revealed that nearly 30% of the population is physically inactive. It is interesting to note how this percentage corresponds exactly with the percentage of individuals who are considered to be obese. Also, an additional 40 to 50% of the U.S. population does not engage in the necessary amount of physical activity to achieve health benefits. Through a process known as tracking, these statistics are reported to have remained relatively consistent for the past 10 years or so. This is unfortunate given that frequent physical activity has been shown to benefit every system of the human body. For example, exercise physiologists have documented several important changes in the body that accompany participation in an ongoing exercise program. These include a decreased chance of heart disease and stroke, an increase in good (HDL) cholesterol, a decrease in bad (LDL) cholesterol, a lowered risk of osteoporosis (i.e., brittle bones), a decreased percentage of body fat, an increased lean muscle mass, lower blood pressure, and an improved immune system. In addition, in 1998, Leith reported that regular participation in physical activity has been found to be associated with several psychological benefits such as lowered anxiety, lowered depression, improved self-concept, and beter overall mood.

In 1996, Manley, the former U.S. surgeon general, made the following observation. RIFT Platinum Because physical activity is so effective in preventing diseases, preventing premature death, and promoting a high quality of life, it should be accorded the same level of attention that is given to other important health practices that affect the nation. This assertion suggests that there is absolutely no doubt that physical activity can be described as efficacious in the prevention and treatment of many medical conditions, including obesity. However, despite this and extant research highlighting the benefits of physical activity and a healthy diet, people remain inactive and eat poorly. Therefore, it is important to consider the ‘‘why’’ of this phenomenon. The next section summarizes contemporary motivational theories relating to these topics and examines their relevance for influencing the health behaviors of diet and exercise.

The term ‘‘motivation’’ is actually a derivative of the Latin word movere, meaning ‘‘to move.’’ It is the psychological termused to explain why people do, or do not do, certain things. RIFT Platinum For example, why do some individuals exercise regularly and eat healthy diets, whereas others choose the options of inactivity and eating junk foods? This is not an easy question to answer, but the bottom line is that people’s underlying motivation can be understood by looking at three characteristics of behavior. First, people’s selection of certain activities over others indicates something about their motivation. To paraphrase, what is it that is important to people personally? Their answers to that question will indicate their likelihood or reluctance to engage in a specific behavior. Second, rift gold the effort that people put into any activity also reveals their underlying motivation. In other words, the more effort people put into any behavior, the more motivated they are to accomplish that goal. The harder people work toward accomplishing a task, the more they want it. Finally, the degree of persistence that people demonstrate in their pursuit of a goal also reveals their level of motivation. If they refuse to give up and really want it but still give up easily, they did not want it enough in the first place. Therefore, it is important that each and every individual is aware of these three benchmarks of motivational theory.

Analgesics

Analgesics are drugs that relieve pain selectively, without affecting consciousness or sensory perception. This is the important distinction between analgesics rift gold and anesthetics. Intensive research on the biochemistry of analgesia from the 1970s has shown that there are two main classes of analgesics. The first, opioids, combine chemically with molecular ‘‘receptors’’ in the brain to block pain impulses in the central nervous system. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alleviate pain by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that cause local inflammation and pain at the site of an injury or infection. Opioid analgesics can be used for short-term or long-term relief of severe pain; NSAIDs are used to relieve moderate pain, such as headaches, superficial injuries, or muscle strain.

Opium, the dried, powdered sap of unripe poppy seedpods, has been used as an analgesic since antiquity. Over 20 different alkaloids are found in dry opium, of which the most important is morphine. The correct chemical structure of morphine was proposed in 1925 and confirmed by total synthesis in 1955. Morphine, administered by subcutaneous injection, effectively relieves pain, but there are various side-effects such as drowsiness, respiratory depression, nausea, and vomiting. The analgesic effect peaks at about 1 hour after administration and lasts 4–5 hours. Morphine users develop physical dependence on the drug and become tolerant to it. Increasing doses are needed to maintain its effectiveness, and serious withdrawal symptoms accompany the cessation of morphine medication. Codeine, another naturally occurring opium alkaloid, is a less potent analgesic than morphine, but it is also less addictive and produces less nausea than morphine. It can be administered orally and is often used in conjunction with aspirin. Meperidine (Demerol), a synthetic morphine analog identified in 1939, was originally thought to provide short-lasting analgesia without addiction, but this proved false and the drug was widely abused. It is still the most common drug used for pain relief in childbirth and has superseded morphine. The side effects of meperidine are similar to those of morphine but are less severe and are further reduced when given with the antihistamine drug promethazine. In prolonged use meperidine may cross the placental barrier, and the drug has been found in newborn infants. Heroin, introduced in 1898, was also falsely heralded as a nonaddictive alternative to morphine. It is about ten times more potent than morphine when administered intravenously and is still used clinically for its analgesic properties in some countries, though it is not generally available for therapeutic purposes due to its highly addictive propensities. Methadone, a synthetic opioid analgesic discovered in Germany during World War II, has long-lasting analgesic effects when taken orally, and, as it alleviates the euphoriaproducing effects of heroin, it is used to control the withdrawal symptoms of heroin addiction. The opioid analgesics were formally called narcotic drugs as they induce sleep and cause physiological dependence and addiction. The term is less commonly used in medicine because many drugs other than opioids also show these effects. In 1973 complex compounds called opioid receptors, which can combine with opioid molecules, were discovered in the brain, hypothalamus, and spinal cord. At least eight such substances are known, though only four are thought to be important to the central nervous system. The best understood is the m receptor, which affects euphoria, respiratory depression, tolerance, and analgesia. The k receptor is also involved in analgesia as well as diuresis, sedation, and physical dependence. Soon after discovery of these receptors, peptide-like compounds consisting of chains of amino-acid residues and showing opioid properties were found in the pituitary gland. Three groups of endogenous opioid peptides known as endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins were discovered around 1975. Found to be neurotransmitters, one of the most important is b-endorphin, consisting of a chain of 30 amino acid residues. It is synthesized, stored, and released from cells in the pituitary gland, and it can also be prepared synthetically. Injected intravenously, b-endorphin is three times more potent than morphine. Interest in these drugs intensified when two potent analgesic pentapeptides, each containing five linked amino acids, were found in extracts of pig brain. Named enkephalins, they are derived from endorphins. They can be prepared synthetically and injected intravenously to induce analgesia by combining with receptors in the brain in the manner of the opioids.

Several chemically unrelated groups of organic compounds also show mild analgesic properties. They include derivatives of salicylic acid, pyrazolone, and phenacetin. These nonopioid drugs are often self-prescribed, though continued use can lead to adverse effects including drug abuse and addiction, allergic reactions, gastrointestinal irritation, and fatal overdose. The oldest and most widely used nonopioid analgesic is acetyl salicylic acid, or aspirin, first developed and marketed in 1899 by the German chemical company, Bayer. In addition to its analgesic properties, aspirin reduces fever and inflammation by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins. The irritant effect of large doses of aspirin on the stomach lining may result in gastric ulcers. Hypersensitivity to aspirin and related drugs is thought to be due to the accumulation of prostaglandins after the pathways that break them down are blocked. All aspirin-like analgesics inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, and their potency depends on the degree to which they do so. Many share similar side effects, some of which can be serious. However, the inhibition of prostaglandins also reduces the ability of blood platelets to form clots and this effect has given aspirin added value as an antithrombotic drug.

As the mechanisms of analgesic action began to be understood, alternatives to aspirin were introduced. Acetaminophen, a derivative of phenacetin introduced in 1956, is a popular alternative drug that avoids severe symptoms of stomach irritation. This mild analgesic and antipyretic however has much weaker anti-inflammatory properties, and overdoses can cause liver rift gold and kidney damage. Pyrazolone analgesics such as phenylbutazone show similar properties to aspirin and have been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Recently potent NSAIDs, sometimes called ‘‘super-aspirins,’’ are widely used to replace aspirin itself. These include the propionic acid derivatives, naproxen (first made by Syntex in 1979), ketoprofen (by Wyeth in 1986) and ibuprofen. The latter, manufactured by Upjohn in 1984, is much more potent than aspirin, causes fewer side effects, and is beter tolerated by most individuals. In large doses or prolonged use however, it can cause all the symptoms of other inhibitors of prostaglandin synthesis including gastric irritation and renal toxicity.

Garlic (Allium sativum)

Historically, garlic (Allium sativum) has been revered as part of a healthful diet. Ancient medical texts from Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, rift gold and India prescribed garlic for a number of applications including improving performance, reducing infections, and protection against toxins.[1] These medicinal properties, coupled with its savory characteristics, have made garlic a true cultural icon in many parts of the world.

Garlic, a member of the Alliaceae family of plants, has characteristics similar to onions, leeks, and chives. Its intake is not known with any degree of certainty, since it is not traditionally considered in dietary assessment surveys, and as personal preferences vary considerably. Regardless, consumption varies from region to region, and from individual to individual within a region.[2,3] According to recent United States Deparment of Agriculture (USDA) reports, during any typical day, about 18% of Americans consume at least one food containing garlic. Average intake in the United States has been estimated to be about 0.6 g=week or less,[2] while in some parts of China, it may be as great as 20 g=day.[4,5] Garlic also continues to be one of the top selling dietary supplements in the United States and in several other parts of the world. A recent study in China provided evidence that a reduction in prostate cancer risk occurred when subjects consumed more than 10 g=day compared to those consuming 2.2 g=day or less.[6] While several cellular processes can be modified by garlic or its constituents, it remains unclear who will benefit most from intervention strategies, what factors determine the response, and the minimum quantity and duration needed to bring about a response.

While some appear to be able to tolerate rather large quantities of garlic, e.g., 20 g=day, some may not be as resistant. While a spectrum of adverse reactions has been observed, including contact dermatitis, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal disturbances, bleeding abnormalities, and anaphylactic shock; the overall incidence is quite low. Claims about the health benefits of garlic likely contributed to its clinical usage, especially by individuals flirting with alternative health care strategies. Peng et al.[10] found in their study that about 43% of veteran outpatients were taking at least one dietary supplement along with their prescription medication(s). The most common products included vitamins and minerals, garlic, Ginkgo biloba, saw palmetto, and ginseng. In a comparable study, Adusumilli found that about 57% of patients undergoing elective surgery had used herbal medicine at some point in their life. Echinacea, aloe vera, ginseng, garlic, and Ginkgo biloba were among the most common. Interestingly, one in six in this study used herbal supplements during the month of surgery. Stys et al. reported that patients with a history of myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, hyperlipidemia, and a family history of coronary artery disease were more likely to use supplements including multivitamins, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B, folate, garlic, calcium, coenzyme Q10, and ginkgo than those without comparable health concerns. Average low-density lipoprotein (LDL), blood pressure, and glycosylated hemoglobin did not differ significantly between users and nonusers.

Garlic is increasingly being recognized to alter several physiological processes that may influence health, including those associated with heart disease and cancer. Preclinical studies provide some of the most convincing evidence that garlic rift gold and its related sulfur components can alter a host of biological processes associated with health. Some of the health benefits attributed to the consumption of garlic and associated allyl sulfur components are:
_ Antibacterial
_ Anticarcinogenic
_ Antifungal
_ Antioxidant
_ Antithrombotic
_ Antiviral
_ Hypolipidemic
While these results generally support earlier views about garlic’s medicinal properties, there is admittedly considerable variability in response. Unfortunately, a dearth of clinical studies exists for establishing firm conclusions about who might gain most from enhanced consumption.

Indigenous Peoples

Asia, according to the InternationalWork Group for Indigenous Affairs (IGWIA), is home to the vast majority (70%) of the world’s indigenous peoples. In India alone, there are 68million Advasis, or indigenous peoples. The Orang Asli, the Mon-Khmer-speaking peoples of the Malaysian peninsula, by contrast, have a population of 150 000 and claim continuous presence in the world’s most ancient rainforests. In East Asia, Taiwanese aboriginal groups are held to be the source of the Austronesian language family, which is now found throughout Oceania. And indigenous peoples in West Asia include the Bakhtiari, rift gold, Laks, Lurs, and Qashqai of Iran, and Assyrian peoples of Iran, Iraq, and Turkey.

Despite this large population that self-identifies as indigenous, the term ‘indigenous’ has been contested, as almost all Asians and Africans consider themselves indigenous. In Africa, the term ‘indigenous’ has come to refer to nomadic peoples, such as the Tuareg of the Sahara and Sahel, hunter gatherers such as the San people of the Kalahari, and pastoralists, including the Masai of East Africa. Their claim to indigenous status has been endorsed by the African Union’s African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, which has noted their status of underrepresentation in government and the need for affirmative action to ensure their survival.

In North and South America, where every nation has indigenous peoples, violence, marginalization, and isolation on native reservations and in remote locations reduced access to traditional food supplies and increased susceptibility to disease. From the seventeenth century to the early twentieth century there were a reported 93 waves of epidemics that devastated native populations with diseases such as typhoid, malaria, smallpox, measles, cholera, a range of sexually transmitted infections, pneumonia, and yellow fever, resulting in population declines
of up to 90–95% (Encarta, n.d.).

In the United States, census data indicate that there are approximately 2 million Native Americans. And in Canada, where Aboriginal people, including the Inuit of the Arctic region, have been designated as members of First Nations, the population is approximately 1 million. In South America, indigenous populations now range from Bolivia with up to 70% of the nation to approximately half of the nation in Peru and Guatemala to a reported 8% in Uruguay (The World Factbook, 1997). In Greenland, also home to the Inuit, indigenous people
comprise 85% of the population. Other indigenous European groups include the Kumandin Peoples of Russia and the Sami of northern Scandinavia. Oceania, which includes Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and approximately 25 000 Pacific Islands, including the Marshall Islands, is home to indigenous groups from Polynesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian origins, rift gold as well as to Torres Straits Islanders. It is also home to indigenous Australians, who have at least 40 000–50 000, and potentially up to 70 000 years presence on the continent, with genetic linkages to the peoples of Papua New Guinea. Indigenous Australians now represent approximately 2.5% of Australia’s population of 20.3 million. Appropriation of land and water and the introduction of disease were two early features of colonial presence in Australia. Introduction of alcohol, opium, and tobacco began a problem of substance abuse that has continued in epidemic proportions. In New Zealand, there were similar patterns of conflict between British settler s and the Maori, as well as the introduction of new diseases. There were however, formal treaties covering land acquisition and ownership (The World Factbook, 2007). The lives of the majority of the world’s 300 million indigenous peoples are characterized by extreme conditions of social and environmental risk, and historical injustice. Through remoteness, poverty, landlessness, and political marginalization, they have minimal access to health care.

Altruism

Feeling Well by Doing Good

Researchers have begun to focus on the benefits to the agent of altruistic or ‘other-regarding’ behavior in the domains of families, rift gold neighborhood, and society. Rowe and Kahn (1998) point to the public health benefits of volunteerism for older adults. They point out that older adults for the most part agree with these two statements: ‘Life is not worth living if one cannot contribute to the well-being of others’; ‘Older people who no longer work should contribute through community service’ (p. 178). They also point out that less than one-third of all older men and women work as volunteers, and those who do spend on average a bit less than 2 h per week. Midlarsky (1991) posed five reasons for benefits to older adults who engage in altruistic requires the recovering alcoholic to help other persons with alcoholism. The framework is one of paradox. The recovering individual who helps others with this disease is to do so freely and with no expectation of reward: And then he discovers that by the divine paradox of this kind of giving he has found his own reward, whether his brother has yet received anything or not. (Alcoholics Anonymous, 1952: 109)

The AA member finds ‘no joy greater than in a Twelfth Step job well done’ (1952: 110). Those experienced with recovering alcoholics will widely attest as to how important such individuals feel that helping others is with regard to their own continued recovery, however much such helping behavior is in effect an AA recruitment activity. To cite a more controversial instance of disinhibited altruism in relation to well-being, psychiatrist Mark Galanter, based on two decades of research, concluded that young people – often from middle-class or affluent families – who joined demanding new religious movements in the 1970s and 1980s had in general a somewhat more significant history of substance abuse than the general population, and were relatively socially isolated. In joining such groups, they reported relief from anxiety, meaninglessness, and depression through being members of communities requiring self-sacrifice and service, however much they may have been subject to authoritative manipulation and misplaced utopian idealism. Disillusionment and attrition after a year or two was the norm, but many still felt that they had discovered a more satisfying way of living (Galanter, 1999).

Most healthy people, however, are not so altruistically inhibited, at least in self-reported sentiment. The U.S. National Opinion Research Center’s (NORC) landmark survey, the General Social Survey (GSS), has been administered across a U.S. national sample 24 times since 1972. Its 2002 administration, with support from the Fetzer Institute, included an item developed by epidemiologist Lynn G. Underwood regarding unselfish love:
‘I feel a selfless caring for others.’ Based on sample methods of the U.S. population that enjoy the highest level of confidence across a highly diversified sample pool, the following results were found with regard to the above question: many times a day (9.8); every day (13.2); most days (20.3); some days (24.0); once in a while (22.3); never or almost never (10.4) (Fetzer Institute, 2002).

There is a caveat – when caring for others is overwhelming and itself a cause of stress, the agent experiences negative health consequences, as is well-documented in caregivers of persons with dementia (Kiecolt-Glaser et al., 2003). However, rather than harping on ‘the burden of care,’ as is characteristic of the gerontological literature, it needs to be stated that giving to others under ordinary circumstances seems to have significant benefits for the agent. A relevant study (Schwartz et al., 2003) points to health benefits in generous behavior, but with the important proviso that there are adverse health consequences associated with being overly taxed. behavior: enhanced social integration; distraction from the agent’s own problems; enhanced meaningfulness; increased perception of self-efficacy and competence; improved mood or more physically active lifestyle. The idea of encouraging positive prosocial behavior as a means to well-being and health is not a new idea. For example, the transition in the 1820s in the United States and England from the maltreatment of mentally ill individuals – usually bound in shackles and physically abused – to ‘moral treatment’ was based not only on treating the insane with kindness and sympathy, but also on occupying their time with helping behaviors in the community and cultivating the love of nature. This evidently was quite successful, giving rise to the sweeping grounds of the Connecticut Retreat for the Insane (founded in 1822) in Hartford, now known as the Institute of Living; McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts; and several other sister institutions in eastern cities in the United States. Residents would do everything from milking cows and harvesting gardens to washing the dishes and sewing gifts for the needy (Clouette and Deslandes, 1997).

What Is There to Lose? To Gain?

Although no one is without health risk—even the fittest person can have a heart attack, diabetes, or cancer—health and well-being are apt to be in less jeopardy if BMI, body shape, and family health history do not indicate problems. However, if your BMI is 25 or more, rift gold if your fat is primarily located in your upper body, and if you have a personal or family history of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea, losing weight can greatly improve your health. Keep in mind that BMI and waist circumference are just starting points. Other factors also are important. When in doubt, seek a medical evaluation by your physician. A thorough history, examination, and blood studies can clarify whether your weight is having adverse effects on your health. The appropriate plan of action then can be tailored to meet your individual needs.

Losing body fat and keeping it off are not easy. Losing weight and then maintaining a healthful weight require collaboration with knowledgeable health care professionals. Obesity is not only a medical issue but also is a lifestyle issue. Your habits can help you maintain a desirable body weight or they can hamper your efforts to lose weight or even cause you to gain further weight. The types and amounts of food you eat and the exercise you perform will determine whether you gain, lose, or maintain your weight. Therefore, experts recommend that any weight loss program should consist of three main components: nutrition, exercise (or activity), and behavior modification.

Nutrition
Liquid meals, over-the-counter diet pills, and special combinations of foods promising to “burn” fat are not the answers to long-term weight control and better health. Learning to eat differently—to enjoy a well-balanced diet of fewer calories— is the best strategy to achieve health and weight goals. You should begin by substituting the words “healthful nutrition program” for “diet.”

Most people try to lose weight by eating 1,000 to 1,500 calories a day. In many instances, eating fewer than 1,400 calories makes it difficult to eat a balanced diet containing the recommended levels of nutrients. Therefore, nutrition programs that are too low in calories may be hazardous to your health. You can lose weight by eating fewer calories or by increasing exercise. A caloric deficit of 3,500 calories is required to lose 1 pound of fat. Over 7 days, this can be achieved by cutting 500 calories each day from your usual food intake or by cutting 250 calories each day (such as one or two fewer cookies) and burning an additional 250 calories with exercise (such as by walking briskly for 30 minutes). The good news is that a relatively small loss of weight can make a big difference in reducing the risk of health complications from obesity. Even a 10 percent weight loss can lead to improvement in your blood sugar level, lipid values, and blood pressure. Once this degree of weight loss has been achieved, further weight loss goals can then be set, if needed. Rather than aiming for an “ideal” weight, which may not be achievable or desirable, focus on achieving and maintaining a healthful weight. A healthful diet for controlling weight includes foods from all food groups in the Food Guide Pyramid—ensuring balance and variety—in sensible amounts. It is helpful to review the energy density of the food consumed. Fat contains 9 calories/gram, protein 4 calories/gram, and carbohydrates 4 calories/gram. Alcohol contributes 7 calories/gram. For most people, the volume of food consumed determines how full you feel. Therefore, eating a small amount of an energy-dense food (such as fat) is usually not filling, whereas eating a large enough amount to fill you up results in a very large calorie intake. To lose weight, decrease your total calories by cutting back on the fat while filling up on low-calorie high-nutrient foods such as vegetables, fruits, and grains. You also can eat lower-fat versions of foods. However, be careful, because low-fat is not always lowcalorie.

Healthful eating habits also avoid the feast or famine phenomenon. Distributing food selections throughout the day provides nourishment to support daily activities and can help to eliminate energy highs and lows. Three meals and occasional snacks also keep one’s appetite in check.

It is also important to avoid the hazards of repeatedly losing and gaining weight. Although repeated dieting is still a matter of debate, rift gold some studies suggest that it may lower the rate at which calories are burned. When a person is off the diet and more food is eaten, the body stores fat faster and more efficiently. This effect causes regain of the lost weight. In this circumstance, the amount of weight regained often is more than that lost in the first place.

Diet and Nutrition

Knowing what nutrients comprise a well-balanced diet, in what foods to find them, rift gold and in what quantities to eat them are some of the first steps to good health. Applying this knowledge by eating nutrient-rich foods and incorporating physical activity into your schedule at any stage of life are the greatest investments you can make in sustaining good health.
Although healthful eating may lower your risk for certain diseases, there are no guarantees that adhering to the tenets of good nutrition will prevent an illness from developing. Science has shown that not all diseases or disorders are associated with what you eat. However, statistics do show that lifelong food selections may influence the risk for some diseases.
rift gold
Research continues to evaluate and clarify the role that diet and nutrition play in the promotion of health and in the development of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and other illnesses. The nutritional recommendations for prevention of many diseases are similar.
On one of the coldest nights in recent Wrigley Field history -- 34 degrees with a 12 MPH wind blowing in strongly over CF, creating a wind chill of 25 degrees -- one of the slowest runners on the team scored the winning run from first base on a double, rift gold after he was safe at first base on what ordinarily would have been a double play ball.

Geovany Soto scored the gamewinner on Tyler Colvin's double, great news for Colvin as he's been badly slumping, and the Cubs beat the Padres 1-0 in 10 innings Monday night, evening up their record once again at 8-8. The Cubs have been at .500 at every win count this year (1-1, 2-2, etc. on to 8-8), the longest such string they've had since 1930.

I have more numbers for you. Carlos Zambrano had 10 strikeouts; it's the first time he's struck out 10 in a game since his no-hitter in 2008. Better than that, he gave up only three singles and a walk in eight outstanding innings, dropping his season ERA to 4.21, and although he didn't get the "win", he looked like the guy who dominated the National League in August and September last year.

Big Z was matched by the Padres' Tim Stauffer, who gave up ... only four singles and a walk. The Cubs did get Starlin Castro to third base in the sixth inning with two out, but he couldn't score. The wind knocked down virtually every ball hit in the air Monday evening by both teams. Until the game-winning run was scored, Castro and the Padres' Cameron Maybin, who went to third base on an Aramis Ramirez error after a Jason Bartlett single, were the only runners to get to third.

Both teams were playing quickly, either because of the cold or that they wanted to get inside and watch the Bulls game, or both. An announced crowd of 36,592 couldn't have been more than about a third of that -- maybe 12,000 -- in the house, and even though the game went to the ninth inning in under two hours, a lot of people left after Len Kasper (dressed in a Snuggie, of all things) sang in the seventh inning. rift gold More people took off after the Cubs went out 1-2-3 in the last of the ninth; maybe 2,000 remained for the 10th inning as a light rain began to fall.

After Zambrano was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the last of the eighth, Mike Quade called on Sean Marshall, who immediately gave up a single to Chris Denorfia on his first pitch. RIFT Platinum After a sacrifice and a strikeout, Quade yanked Marshall for (presumably) the platoon advantage and brought in Carlos Marmol to face Jorge Cantu.

Since it all worked out OK, I guess I can't complain too much. But Marshall can get both righthanders and lefthanders out, and when Marmol hit Cantu with his first pitch, I feared the worst. Marmol, though, settled down and struck out Nick Hundley and had an uneventful 10th before the game-winning bottom of the inning. Rift Gold The game was played in a snappy two hours and 26 minutes, refreshing after the long, long games in Denver the last two days. That time would be fast for a nine-inning game, much less 10, these days.

In his postgame news conference remarks, Quade revealed that Kosuke Fukudome's wife is due to have a baby tomorrow (although he started by saying "Fukudome's going to have a baby", then corrected himself to note that his wife will actually do that). RIFT Platinum So congratulations to the Fukudomes, and Kosuke started the game-winning inning rally with a one-out walk. Quade said that, weather permitting, Colvin may get a start tomorrow and hopefully build on his game-winning double.

One more bit of history, if you'll indulge me on this cold night. The last 1-0, extra-inning Cubs win at Wrigley Field was this 16-inning win over the Astros on May 31, 2003. Zambrano started that game, too. rift gold Tonight marks the ninth time since 1969 that the Cubs have won a 1-0 extra inning game at Wrigley Field. As far as I can tell they have lost only one such game in that timeframe -- to the Cardinals in 11 innings on Sept. 5, 1976.

The Cubs moved to within a game of the first-place Reds after they lost to the Pirates Monday night. RIFT Platinum The weather forecast for tomorrow is worse than today's -- it's supposed to rain all day and evening. So we'll see if there's baseball. In the meantime, celebrate one of the rarer wins in recent years.
At the UFC 126 post-fight press conference, rift gold Urijah Faber said he was looking forward to one day seeing Jon Jones fight Phil Davis for the light heavyweight title.

He's not the only one.

Since Jones won the belt on Saturday, and to a degree even before UFC 128, media, fans, and even fighters have pegged Davis as the man who could give the unstoppable Jones trouble inside the Octagon.

That's a huge compliment for a 26-year-old who only made his MMA debut in October 2008.

But Davis (8-0), who faces Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 24 this Saturday, RIFT Platinum says he isn't concerning himself with anything other than what's next.

"I don't really think so much about fighting guys until I'm scheduled to fight them," Davis said on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour. "Right now, I'm thinking about Little Nogueira and after I fight Little Nogueira then I'll see who I'm scheduled to fight next. That's really how I take it. I don't worry about ... I just really don't get into it. There's no reason to assume you are going to fight someone. You know, Rift Goldit kind of starts that feeling of awkwardness, if you do, when you see that person. I just fight whoever I have to fight. That's it."

Davis made his UFC debut in February 2010. Since then he has notched wins over Brian Stann, Alexander Gustafsson, Rodney Wallace and Tim Boetsch. RIFT Platinum He was scheduled to fight Matt Hamill, then Jason Brilz, at UFC 129, but was moved to UFN 24 after Tito Ortiz pulled out due to a head injury.

The UFC has brought Davis along nice and slow. A similar approach to the one they used with Jones. rift gold But if Davis gets by Nogueira, the calls to see a Jones vs. Davis title fight will undoubtedly get louder from all corners of the MMA community.

"It's good that they are looking at me. I appreciate that. That's great. RIFT Platinum I mean, one day I would love to fight for the belt. I just need to get there."
